The African wolf (
Golden wolves (Canis anthus) are found across North Africa, as well as in the northern Sahel regions stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east and as far south as northern Tanzania.
Physical Description. The African golden wolf is intermediate in size between the African jackals (L. mesomelas and L. adustus) and the small subspecies of gray wolves, with both sexes weighing 7–15 kg (15–33 lb), and standing 40 cm in height.
Africa's sole species of wolf, Canis simensis is the rarest and most endangered wild canid on the continent.
Dubbed the African golden wolf, it's the first new species of canid—a group that includes wolves, coyotes, and jackals—discovered in 150 years. Africa is also home to two other wolf species, the gray wolf and Ethiopian wolf. (Read "Africa's Last Wolves" in National Geographic magazine.)
The American red wolf – a distinctly different species from the grey wolf – is the rarest wolf in the world, expected to go extinct in less than a decade without substantial intervention.
In most wolf packs, there will be an alpha male and female and frequently an omega male and female. In wolf hierarchy, the males tend to dominate other males and the females dominate other females so that there is generally a low ranking member of each sex.

The maned wolf is the tallest of the wild canids; its long legs are likely an adaptation to the tall grasslands of its native habitat. Fur of the maned wolf may be reddish-brown to golden orange on the sides with long, black legs, and a distinctive black mane.
Geography. The range of the red wolf once extended from Texas to New York. Today, they are found in eastern North Carolina.
