When you set up iCloud for Messages , your messages are stored in the cloud instead of locally on your device. You can see them on any device that's set up for iCloud and Messages, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac.
You can choose to automatically delete your iMessages from your device after 30 days or a year, or to keep them on your device forever. For your convenience, iMessages are backed up in iCloud and encrypted if you have enabled either iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud.
Any messages currently stored in iCloud are now accessible on your device, and any new messages you receive on your device will be stored in iCloud.
Generally, your iPhone will keep all text messages and iMessages unless you delete them manually or make changes to the retention time. Apple offers users the option to keep text messages for the past 30 days, the past year, or permanently. You can go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages to have a check.
The IOS Messages app does not support the saving of text messages, nor are there any apps which really do this well (other than connecting to iTunes with a cable - ugh!). Contrastly, Android has an app like SMS Backup + which will automatically backup all call logs and text messages to Google folders (wirelessly).

Pull up the Google Drive backup if you have one.
To access the file and read the messages, go into the Google Drive associated with your husband's account on a computer. Scan the backup folder for the date you want to take a look at and open it. Any deleted texts should be in there.
The Android operating system stores text messages in the phone's memory, so if they're deleted, there's no way to retrieve them. You can, however, install a text message backup application from the Android market that allows you to restore any deleted text messages.
