Octopuses have demonstrated intelligence in a number of ways, says Jon. 'In experiments they've solved mazes and completed tricky tasks to get food rewards. They're also adept at getting themselves in and out of containers.' There are also intriguing anecdotes about octopuses' abilities and mischievous behaviour.
They can complete puzzles, untie knots, open jars and toddler proof cases, and are expert escape artists from aquariums. Even more fascinating—their intelligence stems from a completely unrelated path to human intelligence, and about two-thirds of their neurons are in their arms, not their head.
If we could turn all the animals into humans to take the IQ test, octopuses would outscore most humans on the math portion at a genuis level of above 140. They would also do very very well at spatial visual. However most of the other fields they would be very low.
There's a strong likelihood that an octopus is as smart as your average dog. Research has shown that the brain capacity of a giant Pacific octopus is roughly the same as that of a dog. In fact, octopuses like to play with dog toys!
Genetic sequences called transposons help regulate learning. Octopuses are brainy creatures with sophisticated smarts, and now scientists have uncovered a clue that may partly explain the cephalopods' remarkable intelligence: Its genes have a genetic quirk that is also seen in humans, a new study finds.
Thankfully, the Giant Pacific Octopus is known to be rather shy and usually friendly towards humans, rarely using its dangerous features to inflict harm.
Invertebrates such as octopuses may experience other emotions such as curiosity in exploration, affection for individuals, or excitement in anticipation of a future reward."
According to their findings, the Belgian Malinois is the smartest pup, with 35 points out of 39. In second place came Border Collies with 26 points, followed closely by the German breed Hovawart, with 25 points. Other clever dogs include Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies and Golden Retrievers.
The domestic cat is attributed a value of between 1–1.71; relative to human value, that is 7.44–7.8. The largest brains in the family Felidae are those of the tigers in Java and Bali. It is debated whether there exists a causal relationship between brain size and intelligence in vertebrates.
Best known for developing the theory of relativity, he is amongst the top most geniuses the world has recognized. Einstein never took an IQ score test. However, based on his historical records, academics have estimated his score to be around 160.
Most people have an average IQ between 85 and 115. Overall, about 98% of people have a score below 130. Only 2% of the population score above that and are considered above average.
Thus, it is important to discuss how distantly related species evolved these similar organs from the viewpoint of the gene expression profile of adult eyes. In this context, we have shown that 941 genes are shared between vertebrates and octopuses. In fact, 879 genes are shared between humans and octopuses.
10- Octopus
Has eight arms, three hearts and is very smart. Did you know Octopuses are about as smart as house cats? They can distinguish one human from another and they know how to open childproof bottles.
Researchers consider octopuses to be the most intelligent invertebrates — maybe as intelligent as a house cat. While tidepooling, you might see a red octopus in the intertidal zone, but it's best not to touch it. Red octopus have sharp beaks and are inclined to bite and then spit venom on the wound.
Octopuses can feel pain, just like all animals.
This study has found that octopuses, one of the most intelligent sea creatures, throw punches at other fish. New research has revealed that octopuses often throw punches when they're hunting alongside other fish.
Chimpanzees. Chimps are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, so it's unsurprising they display intelligence similar to that of humans. Chimps fashion spears and other tools, display a wide range of emotions, and recognize themselves in a mirror. Chimps can learn sign language to communicate with humans.
Bottlenose Dolphins
For years, dolphins have been heralded as the smartest animals on Earth, second only to humans—though some would even contest that ranking. Aside from humans, dolphins have the greatest brain-to-body ratio among animal species, including primates.
The average dog's IQ is about 100. Your average dog is as smart as a two-year-old human! The dog breed with the highest IQ is the Border Collie, followed by other smart pups like the Belgian Malinois, Poodle, and German Shepherd.
Ability to recognise people (and pick on them!)
Jon adds, 'Octopuses appear to be able to recognise individuals outside of their own species, including human faces.
Her camera captured the curious cephalopod drawing closer and closer, its tentacles widening until it fully embraced her. “It was just crawling on my camera, crawling on my lips, giving me a hug. These huge tentacles were up over my face and mask,” Humphreys said.
Octopus caretakers often emphasize that many octopuses voluntarily solicit touch, play, and companionship, even when there is no food or material reward involved. Presumably, if they did not want such interactions, they would not pursue them.
