Fact: You can find this myth in many books; even some scientists, who have never bothered to look for themselves, believe it. There is not a particle of truth in this idea! Spiders are not miniature vampires; all species, as far as we know, digest some solid parts of their prey.
Called vampire spiders, Evarcha culicivora lives near Lake Victoria in the East African nations of Kenya and Uganda. These spiders share the mosquitoes' taste for human and animal blood. “This vampire spider is perhaps the only species we know that is heavily dependent on these [mosquitoes],” says Fredros Okumu.
Evarcha culicivora is a lovely jumping spider found in Africa only around Lake Victoria. Its common name, vampire spider, comes from the fact that it loves blood, although it does not feed on it directly. The prey of the vampire spider are mosquitoes and similar dipterans, and it can feed on a variety of species.
Snails, spiders and octopi have something in common- they all have blue blood! We're not talking in the sense of royalty, these creatures literally have blue blood. So why is their blood blue and ours red? One of the purposes of blood is to carry oxygen around the body.
Feel Love, Sadness, and Joy Just like Human
More complex creatures such as our pet dogs and cats do in fact have a personality and may very well be friendly or standoffish, but a Tarantula or any other spider lacks the brain capacity to, “Care,” about anything in the human sense.
There are many types of spiders in our homes. Some are harmless and non-poisonous, while others can be dangerous if they bite or sting. Here are some common house spider species that are harmless: Cellar spiders.
Portia fimbriata, known as the Fringed Jumping Spider or often just as Portia is renowned as the world's most intelligent spider. It is a spider hunter which modifies its hunting strategies and learns from situations as it encounters them.
They don't feel 'pain,' but may feel irritation and probably can sense if they are damaged.
Just like any other animal, spiders are not excluded from releasing waste. Their way of releasing their poop and urine is combined through one source - from their anus. Their poop often consists of insects and waste products since those are their primary food source.
Although adult male spiders are like vertebrates in having a pair of abdominal testes, their genital apparatus only vaguely resembles that of a vertebrate.
Kumonga (Japanese: クモンガ, Hepburn: Kumonga) is a mutated, enormous spider-like kaiju that first appears in Toho's 1967 film Son of Godzilla and went on to appear in the films Destroy All Monsters, All Monsters Attack (through stock footage) and Godzilla: Final Wars.
"Wolf spider are harmless and, indeed, provide valuable pest control around our homes and yards because they eat pest insects," says Nancy Hinkle, a professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia. "As might be guessed from their name, wolf spiders are hunters and stalk their prey.
According to some folklore, as well as myriad motion pictures, vampires can turn into bats or wolves, but those aren't the vampire's only animal connections. In Bulgaria and Serbia, people believed that animals had a role in making the dead into vampires.
The Mongolarachne are an extinct genus of giant spiders that existed during the Jurassic period. To date, only two fossilised specimens have been discovered, the previously named Nephila jurassica specimen, which is an adult female, and the Mongolarachne jurassica male.
So unless they did a complete overhaul of their respiratory system, a giant spider wouldn't be able to get enough oxygen to move around. This could be related to why some giant dragonflies were able to fly around 300 million years ago, when the atmosphere contained more oxygen (35% compared to 21% now).
Like most animals, spiders have circadian rhythms. These internal clocks tell the spider when to rest. Just like other animals, some spiders rest at night while others rest during the day.
Doing your household chores keeps spiders away. It's simple – just like they love dark areas, they also like cluttered and dirty places. Thus, maintaining a clean home will discourage spiders or other insects from inhabiting your bed or house.
They sense their world mostly through vibrations and scent/taste. Jumping spiders, however, have excellent vision. They can see movement and objects much more clearly than can other spiders. They will follow your movements, including your head movements while you are looking at them.
The researchers mated 68 virgin P. globosus females with two males. They found that the number of squeezes the males made were associated with the number of times the females cried out during sex. Stridulations became more frequent if males failed to loosen a squeeze in response to a previous plea.
Leg loss is a common phenomenon in spiders, and according to the species 5% to 40% of the adults can present at least one missing leg. There is no possibility of regeneration after adult moult and the animal must manage with its missing appendages until its death.
To a spider, losing a leg isn't a very big deal. Heck, some even voluntarily castrate themselves. Overall, there's a slight lag in development time. Being short a leg or two (or six) is going to slow you down a bit, which makes prey harder to catch.
Spiders do have feelings, but unlike a dog or a cat, they won't bond with you. In fact, they likely won't even recognize you. They simply aren't hardwired to be companions to humans and should never be bought at pet stores, online, or anywhere else.
Male spiders can “hypnotize” female spiders
“It causes the female to enter a passive trance-like state. So to us it looks almost as if she's been knocked out. It's not clear whether it's her decision to become passive, or whether this male pheromone is causing her to to enter that trance.
You can't get spider DNA from a bite, but you can get it other ways. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, celebrates its 20th anniversary today.
