Women have been eligible for flying roles in the RAAF since 1987, with Flight-Lieutenant Robyn Williams and Officer Cadet Deborah Hicks becoming the service's first women pilots in 1988. In 1992, restrictions were lifted allowing women to train as fast jet pilots.
There are sequels and then there is Top Gun: Maverick, a movie not just 35 years in the making but required its first female fighter pilot, played by Monica Barbaro to undergo intense training and act whilst attempting air-defying aerial maneuvers herself.
