Legal age in Japan is 20 years old, but since April 2022, voting age has been lowered to 18 years old. As a consequence, new rights and responsibilities related to living within society are now accessible to younger adults.
Since 18 has become the age of adulthood in Japan, one may think that almost everything somebody can do would begin around that age. However, this not the case and certain activities may require different age.
TOKYO (AP) — Japan's parliament on Friday raised the age of sexual consent to 16 from 13, a limit which had remained unchanged for more than a century and was among the world's lowest, amid calls for greater protection of children and women.
On April 1, 2022, Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood to 18 years old. Some two million people who are 18 and 19 years old came of age in Japan on that day. This follows revision of the Civil Code, which first set the legal age at 20-year-old in 1876. It's the first time this has been changed in over 140 years.
Article 4 of Japan's civil code defines the age of adulthood (成年, seinen) at 20 years old.
The legal age for consensual sex varies between 16 and 17 years across Australian state and territory jurisdictions (see Table 2). For other sexual activities, the criminal legislation relating to different types of sexual behaviours and interactions varies across Australian jurisdictions.

Transition to adulthood is gradual

In 1876, 20 became the legal age of adulthood, but it was lowered to the age of 18 in 2022. Municipal governments host special coming-of-age ceremonies for 18-year-olds on this day. However, since times of celebrating 20-year-olds as adults were long, most regions celebrate people becoming 20 on this day still.
If you are 16 years old and above, you can legally have sex (or do another sexual activity) with another person who is 16 years or older as long as you both agree to it.
A person over the age of 21 may have sexual intercourse with a person who is 14 years of age or older, but not yet 16 years of age, provided that his or her inability to self-determine sexually is not exploited.
Who Can Get Married in Japan? Article 731 to 737 of the Japanese Civil Code stipulates the following requirements: The male partner must be 18 years of age or older and the female partner must be 18 years of age or older. A person who is under 18 years of age cannot get married in Japan without a parent's approval.

In Japan's prefectures, equivalent to American states, the lowest age of consent was already at 16 years old. The age of consent in Tokyo remains at 18. Another recent modernization of the sex crime law in 2017 allowed men to be considered victims of rape for the first time and again clarified the crime's definition.
Japan on Monday marked its first Coming of Age Day since the age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18, but with many 18-year-olds busy finding work or studying for college entrance exams, most municipalities retained traditional celebrations for 20-year-olds.

The lowest age of consent is 9 years for Maldives and 12 years for Angola, Mexico, Philippines, South Sudan and Sudan, which is the minimum age in the world. The age of consent in the United States varies from 16 to 18.
The current rules for age of consent in Germany were set following a post-reunification penal law reform in 1994. The ages of 14 and 16 had been relevant since the Criminal Code for the German Empire came into force in 1872: Under § 176, sexual acts with children under 14 were illegal and have been always since.
The equivalent in Australian culture was the 21st Birthday. And originally the "key to the door" was given to a son or daughter at their 21st Birthday. Of course this changed over time to be a symbolic "Key to the Door" of Adulthood.

Japanese Civil Code
The minimum age for marriage used to be 18 for men, and 16 for women. However, following the change in the age of adulthood in Japan from April 1st, 2022, it has become 18 for both men and women.
