Since sperm can remain in the female dog's reproductive tract for up to seven days, female dogs don't have to ovulate on the day they mated to become pregnant. If a female dog has mated with two or more male dogs, she can have puppies from different dads in the same litter.
If a female dog is inseminated by more than one sire, especially if the semen from both sires is deposited at nearly the same time, the likelihood that the puppies in the resultant litter will be born by different fathers is less than 1%.
So, can puppies in the same litter have different fathers? Yes! Female dogs can be mated by more than one dog during their fertile period meaning a mixture of sperm is present and waiting to fertilise her eggs when she ovulates. The technical term for this is superfecundation.
Because of segregation and recombination, no two offspring inherit the exact same chromosomes from their parents. This explains why puppy siblings can look so different from each other. One puppy may inherit a genetic variant for black fur, while another puppy from the same litter may inherit a variant for yellow fur.
In other words, if there is a large age gap between the sire and dam, you get litters full of males, while if the sire and dam are approximately equal in age you get litters containing more females.
For each pup it's a 50/50 chance (as near as) it will be male or female. So in a 2-pup litter you could have M,M or M,F or F,M or F,F. So it's 50% of the time the two pups will be the same sex. Each additional pup halves the chances.
A puppy's anus is located directly under its tail. If your puppy is male, you will only be able to see its anus. If your puppy is female, you will see a raised, fleshy area just under the anus. This is the vulva.
What exactly is “littermate syndrome” and is it real? Littermate syndrome can occur when two puppies adopted from the same litter grow up together in the same home. In some cases, these sibling puppies form such a deep bond with each other that they fail to properly socialize with people and other dogs.
Puppies' brains continue developing until they hit sexual maturity (and even a bit beyond that), and there's some convincing research out there that bringing two puppies home at the same time prevents one, or both, of the puppies from reaching his or her full potential.
Even among domestic animals, runts often face rejection. Although it is impossible to definitively conclude that a male dog does not recognize a litter of puppies as their own, it is generally considered that they do not. Male dogs will be introduced to the puppies and learn about them as new members of the household.
Generally speaking, puppies inherit their size from their parents. If you know how big mom and dad are, you'll have a good idea of how big your puppy will be. This is a good place to start if you're trying to estimate your puppy's future size.
The sperm will last inside her for about five to seven days, so if you breed her as soon as she is willing, then breed her again every two or three days until she is no longer willing to allow the male to mount; this means all of her eggs will be fertilized.
It is a very poor decision to get two puppies from the same litter in almost all cases. Sometimes, people with extensive prior K9 knowledge may be able to handle the added stresses of getting two dogs from the same litter, but it is still generally not recommended.
Offspring from a mother-son mating would, therefore, have a 25% chance of inheriting two bad copies of the mutations that have been passed down to the son. This is a greater than 100-fold risk compared to an outbred dog! Inbreeding in dogs has real consequences.

Research suggests that dogs are able to recognize their siblings and their parents later in life as long as they spent the first 16 weeks together. Intuitively, the less time dogs spend with their families as puppies, the less likely it is they'll be able to recognize a family member later on.
Death usually occurs within the first five days of life, but can happen up to ten weeks of age. It is responsible for about 50% of deaths of new-born puppies. Around 30% of pedigree puppies die in their first few weeks of life, with only about half of them dying due to identifiable causes.

When dogs breed, the mother and father each randomly contribute one allele from each locus, giving each allele a 50% chance of being passed on to the pups. One of the alleles at each locus is dominant and determines the traits, like coat color, portrayed in the dog.
