Reasons you can leave the Permanent Forces include if: you reach retirement age. you're made redundant. you're compulsorily transferred to the Reserves.
Officers serve a minimum of between three and fourteen years and in general, the longer the training required the longer the commitment. That said, you can leave without penalty if, during Basic Training you decide the ADF is not for you. See individual job pages for more details.
If you apply to leave the army before you're 18 then it's called Discharge as of Right (DAOR) and the army can't call you up again. Entry-Level Separation

When you join the army, you sign up for 4 years. You can leave at any time after this as long as you give 12 months' notice.
Can they stop me from submitting my leave? Leave is a Commander's program. The Command cannot stop you from formally requesting leave. If you request leave and it is denied, ensure you keep the leave request form showing it was denied for your records.

To get out of the military, you need to be discharged.
Unlike many other positions, you cannot simply just quit the military once you are on active duty. You may choose to finish out a contract and then not renew, or you can get an early discharge if you do not want to wait or cannot wait for a contract to end.
Instead of the standard eight-year contract that you used to have to fulfill with the Air Force, you can now enlist for a period of four years for Active Duty and 2 years for the Guard and Reserves, which is the shortest, standard contract that the Air Force offers to all potential recruits.
