You will need a visa to enter North Korea. For further information contact the Embassy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in London. You must register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if your visit is for more than 24 hours. Most hotels will automatically complete this process on your behalf.
Visa. In principle, any person is allowed to travel to North Korea; only South Koreans and journalists are routinely denied, although there have been some exceptions for journalists.
Tourism: Individuals cannot use a U.S. passport to travel to, in, or through North Korea without a special validation from the Department of State. Special Validations are granted only if it is in the US national interest to do so. Tourists are considered to be participating in activities at their own risk.
If despite our advice, you travel to North Korea, you'll need a visa for all types of travel. North Korea doesn't have an embassy or consulate in Australia. This means you need to travel to another country, such as China, to get your visa.
Traveling to Australia from South Korea with an ETA
An Australian ETA allows South Korean holders a maximum stay of 3 consecutive months in the country with each entry. It is valid for a 12-month period, meaning travelers can enter Australia multiple times as long as the stay does not exceed 3 months.
International travelers can apply for a South Korea ETA to visit the country. All COVID-19 entry restrictions for South Korea were lifted on 11 March 2023.
North Korea - Level 4: Do Not Travel
Exercise increased caution to North Korea due to the critical threat of wrongful detention. All U.S. passports are invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel under the authority of the Secretary of State.
Foreigners can enter North Korea either by air or by train. It is not possible to enter North Korea from South Korea or to enter South Korea from North Korea. Even if you meet all entry requirements, you may be arbitrarily arrested and/or detained at your point of entry.
Freedom of movement
North Korean citizens usually cannot freely travel around the country, let alone travel abroad. Emigration and immigration are strictly controlled.
Such marriages are becoming increasingly common in South Korea. More than 70% of the 33,000 North Koreans who have fled to South Korea are women. There are no official numbers on how many North Koreans have married South Korean men.
Marriage in North Korea
Marriage is allowed at age 18 (for boys) and 17 (for girls). Unlike in South Korea, there are no legal provisions regulating or banning marriage between persons in cases of consanguinity or other types of familial relations. Divorce is allowed, subject to administrative approval.

If you have a British Citizen passport you can enter South Korea as a tourist for up to 90 days without a visa. You must also have an onward or return ticket.
In general, you can take photos freely in North Korea. However, there are a few points to keep in mind. – Always ask permission before taking a photo of a person.
The British Embassy in North Korea is currently closed due to entry and exit restrictions put in place by the North Korean government in response to coronavirus (COVID-19).
Internet access is available in North Korea, but is only permitted with special authorization. It is primarily used for government purposes, and also by foreigners. The country has some broadband infrastructure, including fiber optic links between major institutions.

Internet access, however, is only available to resident foreigners and not tourists.
