Being mixed with a spaniel who was originally bred as a hunting dog, they were good swimmers and had no trouble staying afloat. Poodles also like water, as their ancestors were duck hunters and were always in or around water. This means naturally, cavoodles should also be good swimmers and love the water.
Cavoodles are usually great with children but children must be taught that they are not just a cuddly toy and need their own space. Children should not touch them when they are sleeping or eating and not be allowed to carry them around.
Because Cavapoos are a mixture of two hunting breeds, the Poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, there is a good chance your Cavapoo pup will enjoy a nice swim. Much of this is their genetics, as their ancestors have hunted ducks and other animals for generations.
Cavoodles don't like loud noises and may get scared by them easily. Unfortunately, this may make them unsuitable for families with small children. This breed is also extremely sensitive to high heat. They must never be left outside for longer during summertime.
Cavoodle grooming is considered to be high maintenance, as they need to be brushed on a weekly basis, or sooner and clipped every 6 weeks. In terms of their personality / daily requirements, they are a relatively attention-demanding breed, but are clever, and will learn quickly with proper instruction.
Establish a sleeping routine and place, before you bring your new puppy home. You can start with crate training your Cavoodle at night and keep your pet's crate in the room you want the dog to sleep in. Older Cavoodles might pick their spot and all you need to do is place a comfortable bed in that place.
Unlike humans, who generally sleep once a day, at night, dogs sleep both at night and throughout the day. Research shows that dogs get around 10 to 12 hours of sleep over the course of a 24-hour day.
They love to be around people, play with balls or toys, or simply curl up on your lap while you watch a movie. Bottom line: A Cavoodle is a loving family dog that forms great attachments to its humans.
Don't leave Cavoodles alone for more than eight hours, and check in every few hours if you can. If their need for companionship is not met and they often feel lonely, this can lead to developing separation anxiety.
Cavoodles have high-energy requirements and love to play around all the time. A daily walk is essential for at least 30 minutes for them to channel this energy as they are more energised than other small breeds. They are not known as hyperactive when fully grown yet intelligent.
Bathing your Cavapoo
If you keep your dog in a short cut, you only need to bathe him every 4-6 weeks. If his hair is long and your yard muddy you can bathe him as often as every 2 weeks.
The one thing that we've noticed the most, though, is how athletic she is. She can jump over four times her height. Being only 9 pounds doesn't stop her from getting up onto any piece of furniture in the house to sit next to us.
Cavapoos are very intelligent which makes training easy. As with many other dogs, the sooner the training and socialisation starts the better, ideally from a young age and as soon as they arrive in the home. Their sensitive nature means Cavapoos don't respond well to heavy-handed training.
Your Cavoodle Puppy will need to sleep a lot so allow them to spend time in their designated bed for as much rest as possible. Being a puppy is exhausting and they can sleep as much as 16 hours a day!
Cavoodle Life Span & Health Problems
Cavoodles have an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years. They might be prone to heart disease. They might experience progressive retinal atrophy, causing blindness.
Additionally, pay close attention to areas that rub, such as the ears, neck, armpits, ankles, and paws. Dogs need to be bathed, and the Cavoodle is no exception. It is recommended that you bathe it every one to two weeks, especially if you frequent the local dog park.
Cavoodle Temperament
They can be very attached to their families, sometimes to one person in particular. Occasionally, this can make them prone to separation anxiety. They also tend to be barkers, so teaching early obedience training and a moderately active lifestyle is essential so that it doesn't become a problem.
We recommend males for young families as they are more easy going and love everyone in the family, where as a girl can choose one person to shower their uncondtional love on, to the exclusion of all others. Often the difference in natures will have more to do the individual traits then gender.
Excitement, anxiety, frustration, pain, attention seeking, and resource solicitation are all common reasons dogs whine at their people. Most commonly, these sounds are aimed at conveying the desire for food, water, a potty break, a toy, attention, etc.
So it's no wonder, that the Cavoodle is prone to suffering some separation anxiety when left alone. However, even within breeds, there can be a range of individual susceptibility to separation anxiety.
One of the most popular Cavoodle colours is red or chestnut. This coat colour often stays consistent throughout a dog's life. Pooches that have this shade of coat may have splashes of white on some parts of their body. Some Cavoodles sport a mix of two colours which is often due to the Cavalier side of the breeding.
One of the most common health problems cavoodles experience is heat sensitivity. This is because they have a short coat and not much fur to protect them from the sun and heat. If you live in a hot climate, it's important to keep your cavoodle cool and out of the sun as much as possible.
Those with less coat, particularly the Smooth-coated Cavoodle, require apparel coats to keep themselves warm. Similarly, Cavoodles groomed in a short hairstyle, will also require a warm jacket. In contrast, grooming your cavoodle in a teddy bear clip will generally be sufficient to keep them warm on cold nights.
Can a Cavoodle be left alone for 8 hours? It is generally not advisable to leave a Cavoodle alone for more than 4-6 hours at a time. If you must leave them alone for longer periods, it is important to provide plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise before and after leaving them.
If you are going to keep your Cavoodle outside, you will need to make sure that they have a warm, sheltered, comfortable and safe place that they can use to escape any bad weather. This can be a kennel placed in a protected place in your backyard such as a patio or alfesco area or even in your garage.
