Fractional CO2 laser therapy uses high-energy beams of light to stimulate cell turnover, which helps exfoliate damaged or discolored skin cells while stimulating collagen production. CO2 laser treatment can minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles, lines, and uneven pigmentation.
Even if you don't see immediate improvement, your initial results will continue to improve throughout the year. On average, most patients get to enjoy silky-smooth skin that lasts for anywhere between three and five years after undergoing laser therapy.
The number of sessions will depend on your skin quality, skin depth, and the severity of your wrinkles, acne scars, pigmented spots, and other concerns. Most patients need 3 to 4 laser skin resurfacing sessions for optimal results. But some patients also need a lot more sessions.
The skin resurfacing laser works by sending a beam through the skin to create tiny columns within it. The skin will naturally go to work to repair those columns by pushing out old skin and replacing it with new skin. The newer and healthier skin can make people look up to ten years younger very quickly.
Rebuilding Collagen
So, we've established that collagen and elastin are essential to healthy skin. Now, we can explain why the results of treatment with Co2re can take several months to develop. As a rule of thumb, the body needs about 12 weeks to rebuild collagen.
Most patients only need one CO2 treatment to see results; However, some patients with deeper wrinkles or scarring may need multiple treatments to see results. Are there any side effects or possible risks to A co2 laser treatment? Like any medical procedure, there are risks associated with a co2 laser treatment.
Risks / Benefits
Acne flares may occur after laser resurfacing. This may resolve on its own, or can be treated with conventional acne therapies. Hyperpigmentation, and more rarely, hypopigmentation, may result in the laser-treated areas.
Whether you're looking to treat scars, stretch marks, or skin growths, or just trying to give your complexion the rejuvenation it deserves, the CO2 laser is certainly one of the most effective and powerful tools on the market.
Botox is one of the less expensive options for treating deep wrinkles, but it only lasts three to six months and requires multiple treatments in one year. Chemical Peels: Chemicals peels remove the old, damaged outer layer of skin and helps the deeper layers of skin start regenerating faster.
Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion scrapes away layers of your skin. This treatment removes skin layers to reduce wrinkles or irregular skin depressions. This helps you regain smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
The best fractional CO2 lasers are the Fraxel Re: pair, MiXto laser, TotalFX and Matrix CO2.
Fraxel. Fractional skin resurfacing lasers such as Fraxel can be used to smooth skin irregularities in your sixties, eliminate discoloration, and even skin tone. These lasers can also help to smooth fine lines and shallow wrinkles for mature skin.
In a matter of four to six treatment sessions*, laser resurfacing can remove dead skin cells from the face and rejuvenate the skin's surface along with its underlying layers. Unlike injectables, which produce near-immediate results, laser treatment is more subtle and takes multiple treatments to create optimal effects.
The newest version of CO2 laser resurfacing (fractionated CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy (known as ultrapulse) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery takes up to two weeks.
Disadvantages of CO2 Resurfacing
Like dermabrasion, this type of laser resurfacing requires a good deal of recovery time. The patient's skin will be weepy for two weeks and will require thorough cleaning four to five times daily, along with application of ointment to keep the skin from scabbing.
Experts agree that the effects last for as long as eight years or even longer. CO2 laser skin resurfacing rarely requires any repeated treatment. If your doctor is doing a facelift, they may go over the same area on your skin very lightly once more. Otherwise, you no longer have to go through the procedure again.
Disadvantages. CO2 lasers are very sensitive machines. The mirrors that focus the laser require realignment if they get knocked out of place. The realignment must be done by a specialist, which can be an expensive ordeal.
CO2 lasers are ablative lasers that work by traumatizing the skin in a controlled environment. This process removes the outer layer of skin (often called the epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (the dermis).
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is a proven treatment method for tightening loose skin. The heat introduced from the laser stimulates the skin and encourages the production of additional collagen. The result is skin that appears much closer to its younger state.
Though your skin may remain pink or red for a few weeks after your CO2 laser resurfacing recovery, you can expect to see results in the first week. But after that sixth week of your CO2 laser recovery, you can expect to see improved wrinkle reduction while the redness fades.
However, new collagen growth can take anywhere from four to 12 weeks to complete. Keep in mind that while certain procedures can be very effective at restoring and replacing collagen, these results aren't permanent. Depending on the collagen rebuilding procedure and areas treated, results can last a year or longer.
