It also reduces weed germination. After mowing apply Seasol hose-on to strengthen leaf blades to reduce stress from heat and drought. Apply it early morning so the grass has time to dry before the onset of a cool night. For more details check out our video “How to Care for Lawns – Mowing & maintenance”.
Seasol Lawn Care is ideal to use after mowing. It's a fast acting liquid, which goes to work immediately and is safe on all lawns including buffalo.
Do not apply Seasol and PowerFeed during the heat of the day. As PowerFeed is a fertiliser it may burn the foliage of the plant or lawn. If fungal problems are an issue, it is best to apply Seasol and PowerFeed in the morning to avoid moisture residue on the foliage overnight.
The perfect time to cut your grass would be right before your fertilization treatment. This way, your lawn is already at its perfect length when it gets fertilized and you most likely won't have to break out the lawnmower for another week.
Lawn fertilising tips
Allow at least two days after mowing before fertilising. Wait about a week after feeding before you mow - and leave the catcher off the first time (the fertiliser could all end up in it if it's left on!)
It's a question we all face when mowing the grass: Should I bag my clippings or leave them on the lawn? In most cases, the answer is easy. Recycle the grass clippings by leaving them on the lawn. Doing so will not only save you time and energy, but will also return valuable nutrients to the lawn.
Wait at least a week after applying fertiliser to mow your lawn, to give the soil a chance to absorb and use the fertiliser.
Technically, you can apply fertilizer to wet grass but it is not advisable. Although some fertilizers benefit from slightly moist grass, if your lawn is too wet, it will fail to properly absorb the nutrients. This includes both granular and liquid fertilizer products.
Some people find that by trimming the edges first you are able to mow over the cut grass from the edges, which will leave the lawn clean of debris when finished. But if you don't mind blowing these trimmings away afterwards, then it doesn't really matter. In some cases, we have seen people edge first.
This doesn't mean to say that controlled or slow release fertiliser don't dissolve. Some do such as Lawnsmith Spring & Summer for Clay or Sandy Soil. These take perhaps 10 to 20 days to dissolve in good moisture conditions.
You can't overdose on Seasol. It's not a Fertiliser. But it does have amazing healing qualities. One capful in a 10 litre watering can will treat around 4m2.
Seasol and PowerFeed are liquids, they are readily absorbed into the soil and the plant foliage. Therefore you do not need to water them in. If you are treating your soil with Seasol Super Soil Wetter and Conditioner, please ensure that you do wash it off the foliage, to prevent burning.
Seasol is especially effective when used directly onto foliage as it's absorbed through the leaves. Seasol promotes healthy roots, encourages beneficial soil micro-organisms, stimulates flowering and fruiting and helps plants to cope with stresses like heat, drought, frost and pest and disease attack.
What is the best time of the day to apply Seasol and PowerFeed? First thing in the morning or late in the evening. Do not apply Seasol and PowerFeed during the heat of the day. As PowerFeed is a fertiliser it may burn the foliage of the plant or lawn.
This ensures that the wees uncut leaves take up the maximum amount of herbicide. Do not apply when rain is expected as it will just get washed away. Spray should not come into contact with foliage/roots of plants that you do not want to kill. Seasol Another brilliant product!
Seasol and PowerFeed liquids are fine to use for up to five years. The date on the back of the container starting with “DOM DD/MM/YY” is the date the product was manufactured. Seasol and PowerFeed granules (with Troforte) contains beneficial microbes that are activated when exposed to moisture.
If your lawn is overgrown and full of weeds, mow before edging. So, you can remove a thick layer of grass that would otherwise make it hard to edge. This also helps to keep the edges neat and clear. If the length of your grass is short and tidy, then it's likely better to start with edging.
If you mow first, you'll have a much easier time manoeuvering around obstacles like trees and flower beds. However, whipper snipping first will give you a neater edge and make it easier to get straight lines.
Mowing too short or scalping results in stress to the grass plant. Weak grass plants will take longer to recover. To maintain a 3-inch lawn, mow before the grass reaches 4.5 inches tall. Mowing too short can allow weed seeds to get more sun and increase the chance of germination.
Unfortunately, if the fertiliser is exposed to water before it is able to be spread, it breaks down, as you have found. The result is a gooey mess, a bit like cement, which holds onto water and becomes completely unmanageable. It cannot be spread in a traditional spreader.
Wet grass, especially if it is tall, can be a strain on some mowers, possibly causing them to overheat. However, it depends on the mower. Powerful commercial mowers with sharp blades and good cutting decks can handle wetter lawns without trouble. If you're not sure if a lawn is too wet, try mowing a row.
Applying fertilizer in the wrong season can cause increased tender new growth that can be damaged, especially if applied in cold weather in late fall or in winter. So it is best to stop fertilizing during dormant seasons. Additionally, in zones that can be in danger of a late freeze, it's best to wait until mid-spring.
When is the best time to fertilize a lawn – before or after a rain? Too much rain could wash away the fertilizer before it has a chance to soak into the soil, so plan to fertilize several days before a heavy rain arrives or several days later.
Fertilising is an essential part of lawn maintenance, encouraging growth and healthy grass all year long. We suggest doing it twice a year – once in the autumn months to protect it throughout the winter and once in spring to help boost the growth and carry you through the summer months.
