One of the healthiest meals you can eat, usually for breakfast, porridge is a great option. It's easy to make, soft enough to eat, flavourful if you add some jam, sugar or syrup and it's very nutritious. Just make sure you cook it until it's really soft for the easiest consumption.
Oats tend to be a little sticky, so you may need to wait 2–3 days after your wisdom tooth extraction to eat them. After a couple of days, heat up some instant oatmeal to enjoy.
The second best soft foods to eat after a wisdom teeth removal is oatmeal. Oatmeal is a great way to get some warm, solid nutrition in your belly without chomping down. You should, however, avoid steel-cut oats, as these will require a little more emulsifying before you swallow.
It's important to remember that good nutrition is one of the keys to helping promote fast healing. Make sure that you eat soft foods such as scrambled eggs, soft weetbix, yoghurt, baby food or a smoothie.
Yogurt is a great snack to eat after your wisdom teeth are removed. For one thing, it's completely soft, so you won't have to chew at all. For another, it's a good source of protein and other nutrients that you'll need to help recover after surgery.
Foods like ice-cream, soups, pudding, yogurt and cereal are okay. Completely avoid using a straw as the suction it creates can dislodge the clot covering your wound, leading to pain and bleeding which further delays healing. Rinsing, swishing, gurgling and spitting should also be avoided for the same reasons.
Dairy contains proteins that can encourage the growth of bacteria and increase the risk of infection. This is because dairy provides an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, which can lead to swelling and discomfort in the gums and surrounding area.
Bananas. Many oral surgery specialists recommend eating bananas after the surgery. The soft texture is easy to chew and doesn't irritate your gums. Bananas are loaded with minerals and vitamins, including folate, manganese, vitamin B6, and potassium, which are good for your oral health.
Bread is typically tough to chew after wisdom tooth removal and you are generally recommended to avoid any foods that could get stuck to your surgery site. Crackers and breads are notorious for getting stuck on teeth and stuck in the mouth and that can only cause trouble post oral surgery.
Within the first 24 hours after tooth removal surgery, you should avoid consuming anything that involves chewing. Try to limit yourself to liquids exclusively. If they don't fill you up and you want to consume solid food, go for soft meals that don't need much chewing, like pudding or oatmeal.
Well-cooked Pasta or Rice
Pasta and rice can be a viable meal to eat but remember that you'll want to overcook both to make things soft and easy to ingest. Pasta you'll also likely need to cut into smaller portions but that's easily done and can be very tasty (almost a normal meal).
We typically recommend that patients avoid hard or crunchy foods like nuts, chips, toast, cereal or anything else that could possibly be abrasive. It is also important to avoid anything that requires you to bite down aggressively or to chew for too long.
Gatorade, Juice (non-acidic), and Milk are also good options. Immediately following surgery we recommend cool soft foods: Ice-cream, Jello, Pudding, Applesauce, Yogurt, Protein shakes or Milkshakes (no straws!).
Avoid tough or crunchy foods, such as pizza, rice, popcorn, and hamburger. Avoid spicy and acidic foods. Most patients may resume their normal diet 7 days after surgery. Medicines to control pain and prevent infection will be prescribed for you.
Mashed potatoes are great for the first few days because you can flavor them with gravy, butter, garlic, sour cream, cheese, the list goes on. Soft, starchy and filling, you won't feel like you're missing out on solid foods with these!
It is best to avoid soups that come with huge bits of vegetables or meat. A few tiny bits are okay, as long as there is no need to chew. Beef broth, tomato soup and chicken noodle are some of the healthy options patients can consume during the recovery process.
Eat Soft Foods And Avoid Crunchy, Hard, And Tough Foods
Eat yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, pudding, and other soft foods after your surgery. After about a week, you can usually start adding more solid foods to your diet. Avoid crunchy, hard, and tough foods for at least 2 weeks.
After your wisdom tooth extraction, you should avoid consuming hot coffee, tea, and other hot drinks for 24-48 hours. The heat from these liquids can irritate the surgery site and damage the healing process. Instead, go for a cold coffee or ice tea.
While every patient heals at a slightly different pace, most people can begin drinking small amounts of coffee around 5 days after an extraction. If all goes well, within two weeks any swelling should subside and your mouth should be mostly healed. At that point, you can return to drinking your normal amount of coffee.
