18 Years Old and Up
Classes at this age usually involve a mix of sparring, forms, and techniques. There really is no limit to what age you can start Taekwondo. Some of the most successful Taekwondo athletes began training in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. Taekwondo is a martial art that can be started at any age.
Students may begin practicing Taekwondo at any age–and enjoy the benefits at every age.
While it's true that kids and younger adults may have more flexibility than their older counterparts, we also believe in mind over matter. You can start martial arts training late in life and still earn belts — even a black belt if that's what you want to do!
The practice of martial arts is good for the body and mind and students of all ages are welcome in our classes. Many adults who are interested in the martial arts talk themselves out of pursuing their interest simply because they think they are too old. Yet, the reality is that you are never too old to take martial arts and that there are actually millions of adults who are taking martial arts classes.
When asked why they are not enrolling in Taekwondo classes when their children are, the typical answers are “I'm too old to start” or “it's just for kids,” both of which are false. As one of the safest martial arts to learn, you can safely start even if you are an adult.
The average duration can differ when it comes to various types of martial arts. The longest time taken to earn a first degree black belt is 27 years while the shortest training period recorded was 4 years. Going by this study, you can say that it can take anywhere from 5 years to 25 years of rigorous practice.
Taekwondo (also known as Tae Kwon Do) is the art of self defense that originated in Korea. It is recognized as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years. The name was selected for its appropriate description of the art: Tae (foot), Kwon (hand), Do (art).
One of the wonderful things about karate is that it caters to learners of all ages. Whether you are 5, 20 or 50 years old there are numerous reasons to begin a journey into karate. For instance, regardless of age every student will develop different elements from karate, depending on their needs as a student.
Students under 15 years old reaching the "degree" level receive "Poom" (junior or children's degree). This is noted by a belt which is half red and half black. Upon reaching the age of 15, a ceremonial presentation will be held to award the Sr. degree "Dan" rank (solid black belt), with no additional requirements.

You are never too old for karate lessons. There is no age limit, and there is actually very little physical restriction as well. In fact, karate lessons can actually help you improve and overcome some perceived boundaries set by either your age or your physical state.

Tae Kwon Do (3-5 Years)
A student can earn a black belt in Tae Kwon Do faster than in any other form of the martial arts. Black belts in Tae Kwon Do are achieved in degrees, with the practitioner able to earn the first-degree black belt within three to five years.
Can I learn Taekwondo from the internet? Yes, there are all kinds of websites, resources, and videos that can help you learn Taekwondo. However, none will be as effective as an in-person trainer who can correct your movements and tailor their training to your needs.
Many adults join our classes throughout the year because they are looking for something new and more engaging than simply hitting the gym. Many experienced Taekwondo 20+ years earlier and remember the fun and challenge of training, mixed with the reality of learning defense skills so decide to give it another go.
Taekwondo is not all about the physical, and as with the case with most martial arts, Taekwondo has much to do with mental discipline as it does with physical discipline. Taekwondo is not an easy thing to learn, and every single set of moves, every strike, and every stance takes a lot of discipline to master.
There are eight belts in Taekwondo, the first being white, which you receive when you commence training. The following belts are yellow, blue, red, red/black, Cho Dan Bo, black/white and black belt. On each of the colour belts you wear stripes indicating your level of attainment on that belt.
Types of Taekwondo
International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) - This style is a traditional style of taekwondo that puts more emphasis on punching and less emphasis on kicking. American Taekwondo Association (ATA) - As you can probably tell by its name, ATA is the most popular style of taekwondo in America.

Taking on a challenge like tae kwon do after the age of 50 may seem daunting, but with a little common sense and good instructors you will find yourself accomplishing things you might never have thought possible at your age. These are some of the lessons I have learned, sometimes the hard way, during my training.
