After the test
We will write to you if we need more information, or when a decision has been made on your application. If we approve your application you will need to attend a citizenship ceremony. We will send you an invitation letter about four weeks before the event. Wait times for citizenship ceremonies can vary.
Overseas travel before the ceremony
Wait at least 10 days before you apply online with the Australian Passport Office. This is how long it might take for your citizenship details to be recorded in the system. Use your current passport if you need to travel before the ceremony.
90% of applications are processed within 10 months. 90% of approved applicants will have the opportunity to attend a ceremony within 7 months of approval.
When you are granted your first permanent visa, you are usually permitted a 5-year travel facility. This means you can leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you like in the 5 years from the date your permanent visa was granted, as long as your visa remains valid. After 5 years, your travel facility expires.
If you are waiting for the decision on a substantive or permanent visa and want to see family or holiday, you may be able to apply for another visa to enter Australia. If granted a visa, you must comply with all visa conditions and Australian laws.
You can travel overseas while your application is being decided, and your visa application can be decided after you leave and while you are outside of Australia. You can apply for Bridging visa A and Bridging visa B while you are in Australia, which are linked to your pending Resident return visa application.
You may travel to another country, including your home country, provided no other legal impediment precludes you from doing so. However, if a trip lasts longer than 180 days, USCIS may determine that you have not continuously resided in the United States and therefore are ineligible for naturalization.
According to the new legislation, applicants will have to wait for two years if they fail three citizenship tests before retaking a test. The previous system allowed applicants to retake the test as many times as they wanted. Fortunately, there are no additional fees for retaking the test.
To pass the test you must answer 20 multiple choice questions. Five of the questions are specifically about Australian Values - and applicants need to get all of those right. On top of that, they need an overall mark of 75 per cent.
You must notify the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) if you plan to move overseas for six months (183 days) or more in a twelve-month period. You must do this within 7 days from the date of leaving Australia. Update your contact details via myGov. If you already live overseas, you must notify the ATO.
From 4 April 2002, it has been permissible for Australian citizens to acquire citizenship of another country without losing their Australian citizenship. While Australia now recognises dual citizenship, there are still many countries that do not allow their citizens to hold an additional foreign citizenship.
Do I need to attend a ceremony to receive my certificate? Yes. At the ceremony, candidates are required to make their pledge to receive their certificate. This is a legal requirement to become an Australian Citizen.
90% of applications are processed within 11 months. 90% of approved applicants will have the opportunity to attend a ceremony within 8 months of approval.
If USCIS approves your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, we will schedule you to take the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony. The naturalization ceremony is the culmination of the naturalization process.
Once you have taken the oath, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization. You may use this document as proof that you are a U.S. citizen. We strongly recommend that you go to your nearest Social Security Administration (SSA) office to update your Social Security record soon after your naturalization ceremony.
