Pit bull terriers have been banned from importation into Australia for over 15 years but there are some living in Australia from before the ban. There are also many cross-breed dogs that look similar to pit bull terriers. Cross-breed dogs are not declared restricted breed dogs in Tasmania.
Unfortunately, Australia is pretty strict about pet imports, and as of this post Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are not allowed to be imported into the country. Please refer to the official Australia government website for verification of this restriction.

American Pit Bull Terrier
They have been traditionally used as fighting dogs due to their muscular, stocky stature. They are highly intelligent and have a hunting instinct. For these reasons, they were banned from importation in Australia in 2011.
Its a well known fact - Well managed, responsibly owned Pit Bulls are some of the best family dogs. The American Canine Temperament Test Society lists this breed as having one of the most stable temperaments of any of the purebreds, right up there with golden retrievers.
In general, pit bulls aren't aggressive with people but are “less tolerant” of other dogs than many other breeds, says Pamela Reid, PhD, vice president of the ASPCA's Animal Behavior Center in New York. They also have “great tenacity. They put their mind to something, and they do it.
The Animal Foundation's Leid animal shelter adopts out thousands of dogs a year, including many pit bull terriers and we're happy to report that pit bulls make great family pets. Like all dogs, pit bull terriers are individuals who are just as likely to be safe and gentle as any other dog.
In NSW, a restricted dog is one of the following: American pitbull terrier or Pitbull terrier. Japanese tosa. dogo Argentino (Argentinean fighting dog)

Standard for restricted breed dogs

Claiming that pit bulls are just like any other dogs and pose no increased risk to children is completely wrong. This unsupported claim is part of what is getting so many innocent children mauled or even killed by a these dogs. In my professional opinion, pit bulls do not belong in homes with children.
Pit bulls, rottweilers, dobermans are all considered aggressive dogs, while labs and corgis are supposed to be fun and docile. But while breeding might have something to do with temperament, a recent study suggests that a far better predictor of how aggressive a dog will be is what their owner is like.
