There is evidence that children can show signs of anxiety if they see it in their parents. But genetic factors and learned behaviors can also factor into a child's generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Your anxiety could be triggered by the fear of conflict, feeling pressure or expectations from your loved ones or family members, or possibly from a fear of disappointing them… These are just a few examples as to why you might feel anxious around your family or loved ones.
"Many children are sensitive to tension and anxiety in the home," says Dr. Dorfman. When a mother can't manage her own worries, she is "likely to model and engender similar feelings in her child," putting them on track for an anxious adulthood.
Children with generalized anxiety disorder are 3.5 times more likely to have a mother with generalized anxiety disorder. Children with social anxiety disorder are almost 3 times more likely to have a father with anxiety disorder.
Repeated exposure to overly harsh and critical parenting may condition children to overreact to their mistakes, thereby increasing risk for anxiety disorders.
Toxic stress response can occur when a child experiences strong, frequent, and/or prolonged adversity—such as physical or emotional abuse, chronic neglect, caregiver substance abuse or mental illness, exposure to violence, and/or the accumulated burdens of family economic hardship—without adequate adult support.
Authoritarian parenting, which uses stern, harsh behavior with children, can lead to moderately-high levels of anxiety, depression, and withdrawal. Children who're brought up by authoritarian parents tend to be worried about things that a normal child shouldn't be worried about.
Genetic factors: GAD may run in families. Just as a child can inherit parent's brown hair, green eyes, and nearsightedness, a child can also inherit that parent's tendency toward excessive anxiety. Current research suggests that one-third of the risk of experienced GAD is genetic.
Genetic studies show a heritability rate of 30-67% for anxiety disorders. If a first degree relative of a child has an anxiety disorder, there is a chance that the child will also develop anxiety over the course of his or her lifetime.
Clinical genetics
A population-based family study of GAD reported a significant odds ratio (OR; ranging from 2.1 to 2.6) for GAD diagnoses in children of parents with GAD, after excluding offspring with major depressive disorder (MDD) or adjusting for MDD and non-GAD anxiety disorder diagnoses.
The truth is, poor parenting in and of itself can't create an Anxiety Disorder. If you are an anxious parent, it is more likely that your genes rather than your parenting is to blame. Having said that, anxious parenting doesn't help anxious kids –it can exacerbate the problem.
This is a psychological principle known as thought suppression. Thought suppression worsens anxiety when we are in our homes in isolation. The longer the period of isolation, the more likely it becomes for individuals to show signs of anxiety.

Research from 2010 found that children who grew up in environments with a lot of conflict and adversity showed higher stress reactivity in early adulthood, which may put them at greater risk for developing mood and anxiety disorders.
