If you test yourself even earlier than that, it's just as likely that what you measured is simply a normal variation in hormone production. Early positives may mean you have two more babies on the way (which research indicates is more common among women over the age of 35), or they may mean that you have just one.

The range for singletons is 5 – 397 and for twins it is 48 – 683. As you can see, there is a big overlap between the first hCG level in singleton and twins. What this means is that even if you have a first hCG level of 397, it could be a singleton pregnancy.
Specifically, twin and multiple pregnancies can have 30% to 50% higher hCG levels than singleton pregnancies at the same point in early pregnancy. Even so, detection of high hCG levels alone can't reliably predict twin pregnancies.

3 WEEKS: Twins implantation

At this point we can see the dark area with a small circle inside. The dark area is the gestation sac and the small white circle is called a yolk sac. The job of the yolk sac is to provide the growing embryo with nutrients until the placenta takes over later on into pregnancy.
Although the root cause for this is still unknown, we do know that during an IVF transfer, the blastocyst, or developing embryo, can collapse in on itself. When this happens, sometimes it can cause the inner cell mass to split into two. The two inner cell masses lead to the development of twins.
