Unless you actively delete the history between you and another user, Messenger retains the entirety of your back-and-forth conversations, stretching back years. It could be jarring to some to be hit with an old thread with an ex or a family member or friend who has passed.
A Facebook message that has been deleted is permanently lost, at least in terms of Facebook Messenger. However, there are steps you may take to recover those messages from other archives or downloads of Facebook Messenger, as well as your app's cache.
If you can't see your messages or you're getting a “No internet Connection” error, you can try: Updating to the latest version of Messenger. Quitting and reopening the Messenger app. Checking your Wi-Fi or internet connection.

If you are a heavy Messenger user, the app might collect a lot of cache data in the background. Old cached data may lead to Messenger not showing the latest messages on Android. Fortunately, you can clear cache for the Messenger app, which is different from clearing data.
Facebook stores all messages sent and received in Facebook Chat even after you close the chat window to end a conversation with a friend, business contact or colleague.
Open Messenger and tap your profile picture. Scroll down and tap Account Settings. Scroll down and select Download Your Information. Select the Messages check box to download your Messenger history.
You will need to factory reset the phone to restore the backup: Go to Settings > Storage (on older Android versions, go to Settings > Privacy) Tap Factory data reset and wait for the phone to enter setup. During setup, log into the Google Drive account and select the Restore from backup option.
You can't see deleted messages or conversations. Deleting a messagepermanently removes it from your Chat list. Keep in mind that deleting a message or conversation from your Chats list won't delete it from the Chats list of the person you chatted with.
Archived conversations disappear from the Home screen, but you can still read them. Mark all as read. . If you use Messages as your default messaging app, deleted conversations will also be deleted from your device.
A padlock icon is displayed next to the person's profile picture to tell you if a conversation is 'Secret'.
To view the hidden messages on Facebook messenger on your Android device, click on "You May Know" to see different message requests or "Spam" to see the messages labeled as spam. You can choose to open a conversation or delete the messages according to your preference.
You could, for example, write “Anonymous” or “Secret” as the sender. It does not matter if you've been blocked on Facebook Messenger or anywhere else. A text with an anonymous sender will always be delivered.
