In general, the sense of smell is strongest in the evening and weakest overnight and into the early hours of the morning. This reduction in smell sensitivity through the night may explain why odors generally do not cause people to wake up from sleep.
Having body odor, or BO is quite normal. This scent is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat. It's usually stronger in areas where more sweat glands are present — such as your underarms and feet — making your bedroom smell bad in the morning unless you have proper ventilation.
In the journal Chemical Senses, researchers from Brown University (RI, USA) describe how the nose's sense of smell peaks in the evening, operating at optimum capacity just in time for dinner. But the nose is not an early bird; it operates with reduced sensitivity in the early stages of our daily circadian cycle.
"You cannot smell while you are asleep," she says.
A decade ago she and Carskadon had found that the sense of smell all but shuts down during sleep. Now there is evidence that the sense of smell is relatively weak during a quarter of the circadian cycle.
When the body sweats, the bacteria that is present in those areas will feed off the sweat released from the body causing it to smell worse than other areas of the body. Men also sweat greater amounts than women. Frequent bathing or deodorant can help.
There are many different factors that influence the variation between day and ninght. Temperature is one of them, perhaps the most important. Cooler temperatures reduce the concentration of volatile compounds, thus night air smells generally purer/cleaner.
Your ears aren't the only sense organs at work while you sleep. If someone turns on the lights, there's a good chance you'll wake up—that's because your eyes are still taking in visual information, even while your eyelids are closed. The same is true of your sense of touch and even smell.
Dreams Rarely Involve Smell
It is common for dreams to also include the experience of sound and, less often, a feeling of touch and body movement. But experiences of taste and especially smell are quite rare. Less than half of people report having experienced an olfactory dream in their lives.
Bad breath, body odors from sweating, and infrequent change of sheets, pillowcases, or rugs can all contribute to a stale scent in the morning. For those of you who live in apartments with small bedrooms and poor air ventilation, stagnant air is quite common.
Everyone gets bad breath from time to time — especially after eating garlic, onions or other strong foods. But bad breath that doesn't go away (chronic halitosis) could mean you have an oral health issue or a condition that's affecting another part of your body. Halitosis is a symptom of many different conditions.
Smell is a fairly direct measurement of the chemical composition of the air, and touch is a direct measurement of skin pressure. Because there is less 'imagination' involved in smell perception, it might be less influenced by the brain activity happening during dreaming.
Although some theorists have suggested that pain sensations cannot be part of the dreaming world, research has shown that pain sensations occur in about 1% of the dreams in healthy persons and in about 30% of patients with acute, severe pain.
Involuntary imagined experience of smells have been documented in cases of olfactory dreams, hypnotic suggestion, and most prevalently in the form of phantosomia.
While it's true that during some sleep stages our brains pay very little attention to what's happening around us, during other stages we're able to hear and process sounds even in our sleep. Not only that, but we are listening for certain sounds while we sleep, even when we're in deep sleep.
Tactile Hallucinations
Tactile hallucination is the experience of feeling like you're being touched when you're not. It's one of the most common aspects of sleep paralysis. Many people say they feel pressure or contact. It's like something or someone is holding them down.
Sleep talking usually occurs by itself and is most often harmless. However, in some cases, it might be a sign of a more serious sleep disorder or health condition. REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and sleep terrors are two types of sleep disorders that cause some people to shout during sleep.
We associate certain smells with morning. Coffee, juice, toast, sausage, egg, pancake, strawberry jam, maple syrup: we recognize them all.
During the day, the sun heats the air and it causes air to get mixed all over the place due to convection. This kicks up a lot of stuff and generally makes it smell worse. In the colder night, the air is stiller and thus cleaner.

Bacteria on your skin cause body odor. It's completely normal to have a natural body odor and isn't necessarily related to how much you sweat. Sweat itself is odorless. Some medical conditions, genetics, being overweight or eating certain foods could make you more susceptible to bad body odor.
Perspiration and bacteria
Bacteria generally cause sour-smelling sweat. Everyone has bacteria on their skin, and when the bacteria start to break down the sweat, it creates an odor. If you run hot at night, causing sweating, try reducing your room temperature or wearing cooler clothing.
In healthy humans, the sniff-response can occur unconsciously in both wakefulness and sleep.
