Elevated nutrient levels and algal blooms can also cause problems in drinking water in communities nearby and upstream from dead zones. Harmful algal blooms release toxins that contaminate drinking water, causing illnesses for animals and humans.
Experts recommend limiting a Dead Sea swim to 20 minutes or less, as prolonged immersion in such salty water can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and other problems.

Contrary to many people's belief that the high salt content makes it a very safe place to swim, the Dead Sea has been found to be the 2nd most dangerous site to swim in Israel.

The so-called Gulf Dead Zone is a region of the ocean where there is so little oxygen that almost no life exists beneath the surface waters. In 2010, the Gulf Dead Zone was about 20,140 square kilometers (7,776 square miles).
The Gulf's dead zone is considered the world's largest, but it isn't the only area with a dead zone. There's one in the Chesapeake Bay and another in the Baltic Sea. There are about 500 coastal areas that have these dead zones at some part of the year.
Alive in the death zone for more than one night
In 2008, Pemba Gyalje stayed in K2's Death Zone for 90 hours. Before that, in 2006, climber Lincoln Hall, who was left for dead on Everest on May 25, 2006, managed to survive. Lack of oxygen in his blood made it easier for him to get frostbite.
There is no such thing as swimming in the Dead Sea. When you sit your butt down in the water, it essentially feels as though you're floating in a pool with a plastic noodle.
Rinse off your body after every bath
After swimming in the Dead Sea, my advice would be to rinse off your body immediately! Trust me; you don't want to stay with that salt on your body until you get to shower later in the day.
What happens if you swim in the Dead Sea? It is not possible to swim in the Dead Sea. But if you try, the water will push you upwards, not letting you sink. As the salinity of the Dead Sea is more than 34% and it is way denser than freshwater, you will float effortlessly.
Dead zones are the most severe result of eutrophication. This dramatic increase in previously limited nutrients causes massive algal blooms. These "red tides" or Harmful Algal Blooms can cause fish kills, human illness through shellfish poisoning, and death of marine mammals and shore birds.
Low oxygen levels in the water can reduce the availability of commercially desirable species such as large shrimp, and result in lower fish catch. The harmful algal blooms that cause dead zones can make water unsafe for swimming and pollute coastal air, impacting tourism in those areas.
“Dead zones” are deadly: Few or no organisms can survive in their oxygen-depleted, or hypoxic, waters. Often encompassing large swaths of ocean (and even lakes and ponds), dead zones become oceanic deserts, devoid of the usual aquatic biodiversity.
In the older subnautica versions, there was a bottom about 3000 meters deep. But later, it got removed, probably for performance improvement. Now, the crater edge is 8192 meters deep, when you reach that “bottom”, there is no bottom, but you are teleported back to the surface.
There is another interesting aspect to zones of anoxia—not all areas with anoxic bottom water are caused by pollution. The largest "dead zone" on the planet is the entire Black Sea below a depth of about 150 meters.
When there are excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water, algae can bloom to harmful levels. Dead zones form when the algae die, sink to the bottom, and are decomposed by bacteria—a process that strips dissolved oxygen from the surrounding water.
"At 6,334 square miles, the 2021 hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is the 16th largest ever measured in the 35-year record, measured from July 25 to Aug.
"Dead zone" is a more common term for hypoxia, which refers to a reduced level of oxygen in the water. Less oxygen dissolved in the water is often referred to as a “dead zone” because most marine life either dies, or, if they are mobile such as fish, leave the area.
The summits of the world's 14 tallest mountains are all found in what is ominously known as the “death zone,” which is typically identified as 8,000 metres (26,000 feet) above sea level. At these altitudes, the oxygen levels are insufficient to sustain human life for an extended period.
One of the reasons why The Dead Sea's name was given to it is that no creature can live in its hyper-salty water.

When they die naturally, they sink to the seafloor, where they are eaten by scavengers. However, when they are hunted by humans, they are removed from the ocean, disrupting the ocean's carbon cycle.
Whilst boats can easily float in the Dead Sea like a human body, the water's buoyancy makes it impossible for boats to effectively move through the lake.
