Once you are finished spraying, allow the permethrin spray to dry and apply clean sheets. You can also spray clothing and luggage to reduce the risk of spreading bed bugs.
Cover with a clean sheet for sleeping; do not sleep directly on the treated mattress. If you are concerned about the pillows, uncover them and lightly spray treat them with Permethrin also, re-covering them before use.
Don't worry, Permethrin dries odor-free and won't stain or damage your clothes. Just make sure you're outside or in a well-ventilated space.
You do not need to fumigate your entire apartment. However, you do need to wash your bed and pillow sheets in hot water. This should be done the morning after applying the medication at night. You should not shower until you have put the sheets in the wash.

Add a layer of protection to your clothing and gear with Permethrin insect and tick repellent spray — perfect for use on shirts, jackets, pants, socks, shoes, boots, sleeping bags, tents, netting, when outdoors, camping, hunting, or on travel.
You can treat clothes and smaller items with machine washing or dry cleaning, but larger items like mattresses should be vacuumed, covered for several days, or steam-cleaned to properly remove any mites.
Scabies mites do not survive more than 2-3 days away from human skin. Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning.
Fortunately, permethrin is generally safe for use on most types of furniture. However, it's always a good idea to test a small, inconspicuous area first.
Always wear gloves when applying. Don't touch clothing while it is still wet. Wear a face mask when spraying permethrin. Apply spray permethrin in a well-ventilated area, ideally outdoors.

Pour into a bottle and spray literally everywhere in your bed and bedroom. This will kill and repel any dust mites.
But what happens if Permethrin is not washed off? You should not use this medication if you're sensitive to Permethrin or chrysanthemums. If Permethrin is not washed off for a long time or even after 14 hours, it may cause several side effects such as: Mild burning and stinging.
After using permethrin, sanitize all the clothing, underwear, pajamas, hats, sheets, pillowcases, and towels you have used recently. These items should be washed in very hot water or dry-cleaned. You should also wash combs, brushes, hairs clips and other personal care items in hot water.
Spray only your clothing. We said it before, but it's worth repeating: Permethrin spray is only for your clothes and gear. Don't apply it to your skin. And when treating clothes, stick to outerwear: The Environmental Protection Agency says you shouldn't treat underwear with permethrin.
Once you have finished the treatment period, take the sheets and pillowcases off the bed for washing before you shower. You will also need to wash any clothes you have worn over the past 48 hours, or set them aside for at least that period of time. The wash cycle should be with hot water.
Normal washing of clothes and bedding is recommended. Crusted Scabies: There are so many mites, which may fall off as “crusts” (like flakes of skin) that all clothing and bedding should be washed in a hot wash, and floors & chairs vacuumed well.
However, once exposed to a 50°C (122°F) temperature for at least 10 minutes, these microscopic mites will die. Notably, scabies can live for 48-72 hours on a mattress. It is also important to note that scabies can still live for up to 72 hours or three days, even without human contact.
Mites are insect-like organisms that can only be seen with a microscope. They burrow under the skin where they live and lay their eggs. On a person, scabies mites can live for as long as 1-2 months. Off a person, scabies mites usually do not survive more than 48-72 hours.
Vacuum and clean rooms and furniture used by the person with scabies. This is especially recommended in the case of crusted scabies. The use of insecticides is not recommended for environmental control.
Leave permethrin on the body for 8 to 12 hours
To kill the scabies mite, it's important that the permethrin lotion is left on the body for 8 to 12 hours and not washed off. It's best to apply it just before going to bed and leave it on overnight.
Dry permethrin on treated clothing should not cause any problems for humans and most wildlife, though. According to the University of Rhode Island's Tick Encounter Resource Center (TERC), a person who weighs 140 lbs. would experience no negative effects if he or she were exposed to 32 grams of permethrin per day.
It is primarily the agitation of a washing machine which deteriorates the permethrin application as it knocks the molecules loose from the fabric. For best results Sawyer recommends hand washing and air drying. When using a conventional washer and dryer, use the gentle wash and dry cycles.
