Some people choose to embalm before viewing because they prefer the life like appearance that embalming imparts. Some are embalmed, have a viewing and are cremated. It's strictly the choice of the family.
aCremation often gets asked if it is possible to view an unbembalmed body. In most cases – yes – if held soon after the death occurs. It's important to remember that decomposition begins immediately. The longer the time between death and the viewing, the greater the chance that viewing will not be recommended.
With mortuary embalming, the embalmed body is preserved for about a week, so viewings should occur within that time. The embalmed body is suitable for visitation for a little longer than a week. Ideally, burial or cremation should happen within a week of death in most cases where possible.
Embalmed bodies can feel cold and stiff to the touch. Sometimes this can be jarring, but usually it's just a little bit different from what you might expect from an embalmed corpse's typical life like appearance.

Embalming can turn into 120 gallons of "funeral waste" (fecal matter, blood, and former content of internal organs), together with the chemicals from the preservation. Everything gets in the public sewer system, and it's released into waterways sooner or later.
Embalmers do their best to make the body look as natural as possible. But they still look different than a living person as the body no longer has blood circulating in the tissues. Since it's a human art, the process can vary from person to person, some results may be better or worse than others.
Over time, coffins underground will decompose and eventually collapse. Covering the face before closing the casket adds an extra layer of protection and dignity for the deceased's face and can act as a symbolic final goodbye.
Refrigeration is the easiest, most economical method of body preservation. When a body is preserved though refrigeration, it is kept at a temperature below 40°F, which sufficiently delays decomposition.

So, do open caskets smell? Bodies at formal open casket funerals will not smell bad due to having been embalmed shortly after death. However, smells such as perfumes or flowers may be common at an open casket funeral. Bodies with unavoidable smells will typically not be offered an open casket funeral.
A: The mouth can be closed by suture or by using a device that involves placing two small tacks (one anchored in the mandible and the other in the maxilla) in the jaw. The tacks have wires that are then twisted together to hold the mouth closed. This is almost always done because, when relaxed, the mouth stays open.
