The two were able to free Maul after he had been interrogated by the Sith Lord Count Dooku, and together the three rendezvoused with more Death Watch forces on the moon of Zanbar. Maul took command of his forces once again, and assured them that the war they had longed for was at hand.
He fell under the influence of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine of Naboo, and left the Jedi Order. After learning that Palpatine was secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, Dooku turned to the dark side and became a Dark Lord of the Sith himself, replacing Darth Maul as Sidious's second apprentice.
Both he and the Jedi believed that Maul had perished on Naboo. As such, Sidious made Count Dooku, a former Jedi Master whom he had already converted to the dark side, into his new apprentice.
Count Dooku became a Sith Lord after Darth Maul's “death” on Naboo. In fact, in both Canon and Legends, it was the death of his former Padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn at the hands of Darth Maul that served as the catalyst for Dooku to be totally ensnared by Darth Sidious.
Dooku voluntarily left the light side behind and became Darth Sidious' dark side disciple, taking the secret name Darth Tyranus and leading the Separatist army.
Fandom. Question: Did Maul know Sidious was Palpatine? In legends he did. In the darth plagueis novel I'm pretty sure there's a part where maul was reflecting on his master's political machinations and how he is publicly known as palpatine.
Dooku despises Maul for being a threat to him and Maul hated Dooku for being his replacement. They also didn't regard each other as a true Sith: Dooku saw Maul as nothing more than a trained animal and Maul saw Dooku as a Sith pretender.
In fact, in this same scene, Sidious says he is keeping Maul alive because he has "other uses for you!" If Palpatine thought Maul knew he about his double identity, there's no way he would have let him stay alive.

Yoda held the title of Grand Master of the Jedi Order since the days of the High Republic Era. At some point, Yoda took on a human named Kantam Sy as his Padawan. The two were stationed at the Jedi Temple on the planet Endovar.
The notable exception to this, however, is Darth Maul, whose real name has never been revealed, and most likely never will. Although Maul was largely wasted in The Phantom Menace and seemingly killed off unceremoniously at its climax, he was later revealed to have survived being bisected and falling down a vast shaft.
Dooku saw Obi-Wan as a kind of grandson, as Dooku was Qui-Gon's master, and Qui-Gon was Obi-Wan's master. Also, Dooku probably wanted to overthrow Palpatine, and Obi-Wan's personality and the way he fights probably mixed better with Dooku.

With a potential Jedi Code-defying love affair with another Jedi, Dooku is more of a foil to his Clone Wars-era enemies, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Dooku's lover, Jedi Master Jocasta Nu, possibly retaining feelings for Dooku well after he joined the ranks of the Lost Twenty.
Before Dooku was a Sith, he was an esteemed Jedi Council member. As Windu's senior by 30 years, he saw Mace grow up and mature in the Jedi Order. That's why he referred to Windu as an “old friend” in this comic. That's also why Windu tried to confront Dooku directly in Attack of the Clones.
