Eddie asks Tala if she knows if he was able to save the little girl before his death. Tala tells him he did manage to push her out of the way. In this way, Tala explains, he also managed to atone every day for her unnecessary death.
Tala tells Eddie that he killed her in a fire and he immediately knows that she was the innocent child trapped in the hut. Eddie screams and lets out his frustration, which he probably wanted to do his whole life. Tala's burns reappear and she asks Eddie to wash her.
He tried to save the little girl because she was standing under the broken ride that was about to fall on her. Its his 5th birthday and hes a the pier with his family. In the teacup ride on Ruby Pier. He doesn't feel any pain.
Marguerite sits in front of the mirror. Eddie can see her reflection, but his is still not there. Marguerite asks Eddie if he was angry with her when she died and left him alone. He tries to deny it, but has to admit that he was angry to have to lose the woman he loved so young.
The people Eddie meets are- the Blue Man, the Captain, Ruby, his wife Marguerite, and Tala(read the book to know their stories). Surprisingly, out of all these five people, it is Tala- a young girl, who Eddie meets for the first time(in heaven, no less!), who had the most profound impact on him.

Catherine is oppressed and under Eddie's control in her own home, and thus has to “immigrate” in a sense, and leave her childhood home behind. Eddie tries to maintain his control over Catherine in a physical manner, and his repressed desire for her comes to the surface in his shocking kiss.
The relationship between Eddie and Catherine seems very normal at first. Eddie is an overprotective guardian of his niece. However, through the Eddie's actions and various clues from other characters, Eddie's romantic feelings toward Catherine are revealed.
Alfieri is Eddie's conscience, he is aware of Eddie's love of Catherine before anyone else. He attempts to talk Eddie out of having feelings for Catherine and tries to get him to let her go. Alfieri is one of the only people Eddie respects and confesses his feelings to.
Eddie's father in The Five People You Meet in Heaven never spoke to him again. The damage of silence was absolute. Now sitting in the snow outside the diner, Eddie looks in on his father in the diner booth and realizes that he's still being ignored, even in heaven.
Although Mickey was a drunk and touching Eddie's mother, Eddie's father knew he had to save his friend and to preserve the loyalty in their friendship.
After violently grabbing his crying wife and jerking her around, Eddie's father runs after Mickey and into the storm. He finds Mickey at the ocean, and the two men fall into the tide fighting. The water catches Mickey, and Eddie's father decides to rescue him. He pulls Mickey to safety.
Ruby teaches Eddie that anger is a poison and only hurts the person who holds the anger, so people should always forgive. Of all of the five people Eddie meets in heaven, Ruby is the only person who can give Eddie this lesson.
Ruby's husband was later hospitalized in the same room as Eddie's dying father, allowing Ruby to witness Eddie's father's dying words of regret. In heaven, Ruby tells Eddie the true story of how his father died saving Mickey, and teaches him the lesson of forgiveness.
