Elvis was so nervous during his first performances in the 1950s that his legs would often shake. After seeing the wild reaction the audience (especially the women) had to these weird moves, he decided to keep them and put them in future shows.
King of Rock 'n' Roll Elvis Presley experienced performance anxiety throughout his career and, according to his sideman, Scotty Moore, it was during one of his first live performances that Elvis' legs were so shaky from nerves that his iconic 'hip swing' was born.

In the film, Elvis is ordered by a court judge to tone down his gyrating hips before a show in Memphis. His wild dance moves are considered too lewd for an impressionable young audience, and the judge even comes prepared with an arrest warrant should Elvis so much as wiggle a finger.
In an unearthed interview from 1970, just two years after his big comeback special, Elvis opened up about his struggles with nerves. The King said: “They asked me to do it and I was anxious to do some live appearances. “Y'know, I haven't…it had been a long time since I'd been on stage in front of anybody live.”
