While Obi-Wan Kenobi seemed not to know R2-D2 in Star Wars: A New Hope, one theory argues that he recognized the droid but chose not to tell Luke. Despite acting as if he did not know the astromech droid, one theory holds that Obi-Wan Kenobi recognized R2-D2 in Star Wars: A New Hope.
In the original movie Obi Wan Kenobi doesn't recognise R2D2because he has never met the droud. When Lucas came to write the prequels he decided that he wanted R2D2 and C3PO in the movies and the only way he could have them in properly was to have then intwined in Obi Wan and Anakins part of the story.
However, R2-D2's memory is not wiped; as a result, R2-D2 is the only surviving character at the end of the saga who knows the entire story of the Skywalker family.
By the time the story concluded, C-3PO and R2-D2 were given to Bail Organa, but because the former droid has a habit of talking too much, the senator ordered that his memory be wiped so he didn't blab anything about Leia's true parentage. The droids are still in Organa's care when the events of Rogue One kick off.

After Cad Bane had kidnapped and ransacked the memory of C-3PO and R2-D2 for information on the Senate Building's layout, he only had the incident wiped from their memories to avoid having any suspicion falling on him.
Because Vader's past life had been obscured by trauma, it's possible that the memories of the droids weren't present at the time. Additionally, most droids are designed to be identical to another of the same model. Vader could have mistaken the two as any other generic droid, not realizing their significance.
However, Leia's strong-mindedness during Vader's probe denied him the opportunity to discover that she was his daughter. This serves to justify Vader's lack of awareness of his connection to Leia, although perhaps not as satisfyingly as if Lucas had planned for the relationship from the beginning.
R2-D2 was built in 33 BBY on Naboo and belonged to Padmé Amidala. The following year, he became the property of Anakin Skywalker, who he had a trustful friendship with. R2 served in several missions during the Clone Wars, alongside his owner.
However, because he saw their dynamic as a source of weakness, he opted to spare them. Now that the Empire had gained the upper hand against the rebels, their survival didn't mean much to him in the grand scope of the galactic conflict at hand.
Anakin admits to Obi-Wan that he has been arrogant and unappreciative of his training, and apologizes to his master. Obi-Wan assures Anakin that he is proud of him, telling him that he has become a "far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be."
Obi-Wan Kenobi's most powerful villains in Star Wars include his greatest enemy Darth Vader and less well-known ones like Darth Krayt.
Between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan, it's pretty clear that Vader is far more powerful with the force. After all, he pretty easily used the force to stop a starship from taking off in the previous episode, and manhandled Kenobi throughout the majority of the show.
Unlike C-3PO and the rest of the droids used by the Rebellion in the original trilogy, R2 still remembers the fall of the Jedi and would recognize Grogu, whether or not the droid was directly responsible for saving him from Order 66.
Canon characters, such as Anakin Skywalker, whose relationship with R2-D2 is one of the best in the whole series, Rey, Poe Dameron, Hera Snydulla and Kazuda Xiono are fluent in the droid language. And after spending decades with R2 himself, Luke Skywalker is also able to understand him.
One of the mysteries from the original trilogy that was fueled by the prequels is why R2-D2 never told Luke that Darth Vader was his father, as he actually knew Anakin Skywalker and witnessed his turn to the dark side.
When Padmé Amidala became a senator, she took R2-D2 with her. She later gave the droid to her husband Anakin Skywalker after he became a Jedi Knight. R2-D2 served as the maintenance droid for Anakin's starfighter during much of the Clone Wars.
Fall of the Galactic Republic
The Sith stayed in hiding for a thousand years, their survival unknown to the Jedi, as they continued their revenge against the Jedi through Bane's Grand Plan. With Sith teachings passed down by Bane's Rule of Two, the Order managed to survive.
Three months after the Battle of Endor, Skywalker used the lightsaber during a mission to an Imperial research base on the planet Vetine in order to retrieve the last remaining fragment of a Force-sensitive tree. Skywalker gave his lightsaber to R2-D2 for hiding as they entered the Imperial base.
A bunch of astromech droids, including R2-D2, exited the ship to make repairs from the outside. While several other droids were blown off the ship and destroyed, R2 survived and made the repairs that enabled the ship to escape.
