It's well known that Star Wars lead characters Luke Skywalker and Princess (now General) Leia are brother and sister. The estranged siblings didn't know about their familial relationship until "Return of the Jedi." They even shared a passionate kiss in the previous movie, "The Empire Strikes Back."
Leia is annoyed with Han, who insists she has feelings for him, so she kisses Luke to prove she doesn't. Presumably, the scene was simply meant to make Han jealous.
Leia kissed Luke three times: once on the cheek “for luck” right before the swing across on the first Death Star, and once rather forcefully in the sickbay on Hoth (when she's trying to make a point to Han.)
In the first Star Wars movie, Luke was pretty obviously crushing on Leia. She later even kissed him on the lips. The relationship took on a new level of Game of Thrones awkwardness when the big reveal was announced -- and Leia responded by saying somehow she'd always known Luke was her bro.
So when Leia kissed Luke early in the movie in an effort to make Han Solo jealous, it was played as a joke that introduced some mild sexual tension between the three main characters, and upped the will-they-won't-they Leia and Han relationship stakes.
But it is quite uncomfortable to watch now. The two do kiss in the actual cut of the movie, but this is intended to be funny with Leia's ultimate goal to be to make Han jealous, whereas this deleted scene is more emotional, and therefore, all kinds of wrong.
In between escaping the the trash compactor on the Death Star and returning to the Rebel Base on Yavin IV, Han Solo and Princess Leia did, in fact, sleep together during the events of Star Wars.

Yoda tells Luke in order to fulfil his training and become a Jedi Master he must defeat Darth Vader. Luke asks what would happen if he failed, or died, Yoda mentioned that there was another Skywalker with the force. Luke realises that Leia is his sister, repeats her name and they talk, then Yoda dies.

In the rough draft of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Darth Vader tortures Princess Leia with powerful electroshocks. In the incarnation of the second draft of A New Hope, Leia is replaced by Deak Starkiller, the brother of Luke Starkiller (who would become Luke Skywalker in later drafts).
The short answer is that creator George Lucas had no idea Leia would end up becoming Darth Vader's daughter.
If it weren't already apparent based on the real life age gap between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, with Ford being 14 years older than Fisher, Han and Leia are, in fact, separated by ten years within the newly confirmed canon. Officially, Han was born in 29 BBY, while Leia was born in 19 BBY.
Thanks for the A2A, The Force Awakens hints that Han Solo and Princess Leia had been divorced and estranged for a while. The divorce had been triggered by their son Ben Solo embracing the Dark Side and killing his fellow Jedi with the exception of Luke Skywalker.

Han gets a kiss when Leia frees him from the carbonite block at Jabba's Palace and two more when they reunite at the Ewok village. He gets another two when Leia lets him know she's Luke's brother. That means Leia kisses Han five times in Jedi.
