“The symptoms of the Black Death included high fevers, fetid breath, coughing, vomiting of blood and foul body odor,” says Rebecca Ferrell, graduate student in anthropology. “Other symptoms were red bruising or hemorrhaging of skin and swollen lymph nodes.
To purify the air around them, they would burn rosemary and hot tar. These scents, wafting through winding streets of London, were so common during the Great Plague of the 17th century that they became synonymous with the plague itself, historians said.
Rosemary, tansy, lavender, carnation, and feverfew was a popular combination. People carried their posey with them to quickly deploy under their nose should they come across a foul smell that might carry the miasma of the plague.
Poor sanitation in cities created breeding grounds for rats that carried the disease. There were recurrences of the plague in 1361–63, 1369–71, 1374–75, 1390, and 1400. Death rates from the Black Death varied from place to place. The disease spread more quickly in populated towns than in the countryside.

Beyond the high level of mortality, what made the Black Death so terrifying for those experiencing it? It was especially horrifying because it was not just a bubonic plague, meaning that it could attack the lymphatic system and produce painful, pus-filled buboes.

When animals die they release an unpleasant smell. A pungent component of this scent is emitted by putrescine, a volatile diamine that results from the breakdown of fatty acids in the putrefying tissue of dead bodies (Hussain et al., 2013).
The oldest accountable daily ritual of bathing can be traced to the ancient Indians. They used elaborate practices for personal hygiene with three daily baths and washing. These are recorded in the works called grihya sutras which date back to 500 BCE and are in practice today in some communities.

Not even the Greeks and Romans, who pioneered running water and public baths, used soap to clean their bodies. Instead, men and women immersed themselves in water baths and then smeared their bodies with scented olive oils. They used a metal or reed scraper called a strigil to remove any remaining oil or grime.
In the Middle Ages, people would make use of sticks, moss and other plants. Archaeological findings from cesspits of monasteries in Ireland and Norway included small pieces of cloth that were used like toilet paper.
As most people ate meals without knives, forks or spoons, it was also a common convention to wash hands before and after eating. Soap was sometimes used and hair was washed using an alkaline solution such as the one obtained from mixing lime and salt.
How did medieval people brush their teeth? They would rub their teeth and gums with a rough linen. Recipes have been discovered for pastes and powders they might have applied to the cloth to clean and whiten teeth, as well as to freshen breath. Some pastes were made from ground sage mixed with salt crystals.
