The Zodiac Killer's identity has been reportedly found by the FBI, they believe that although the infamous murderer that was active during the 1960s has passed away, the main suspect is thought to be Air Force veteran Gary Francis Poste.
Case Breakers in 2021 said it had identified Poste, who died in 2018, as the killer who referred to himself as Zodiac and taunted authorities with ciphers in letters sent to detectives and the media. The killer terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area and killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969.
According to code-breaking expert David Oranchak, the cipher's text includes: “I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me. … I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner because I now have enough slaves to work for me,” the newspaper reported.

The FBI have confirmed that a group of codebreakers have managed to crack the infamous 340 cipher used by the Zodiac Killer over 50 years ago.
While some of the Zodiac Killer's ciphers were decoded at the time, the “Z-340” message remained unsolved for 51 years, until the codebreakers — David Oranchak of the U.S., Sam Blake of Australia and Jarl Van Eycke of Belgium — revisited the cipher using Blake's decryption software; in a YouTube video posted Friday, ...
There's no clear-cut DNA evidence
Even decades-old evidence can be re-examined with modern technology for blood or semen. But detectives aren't as lucky with Zodiac. Most of his murders involved him shooting the victim and running away.
Whether it was Gary Francis Poste or not, one thing that is clear according to the authorities is that the Zodiac killer would now be around 90 years old.
He actually gave himself the title “Zodiac” in the cryptic letters he sent to the press during his murder spree. The letters often began with the words “This is the Zodiac speaking,” and contained various cryptograms and taunts alluding to his planned murders. Most of the cryptograms remain unsolved to this day.
Gwennie, a neighbor child who was babysat by Gary and his wife in 1970 claimed him to be the Zodiac killer in 2021. Gary has a son who got married to Michelle. In 2016 February 22, Gary was arrested for assaulting and injuring Mary and was charged with one count of corporal injury to a spouse.
Case Breakers noted that Poste spent 40 years working as a house painter. Additionally, a heelprint found in the dirt at the scene of the stabbing was said to have been been from a 'military-style boot' consistent with the style and size of footprints found at three known Zodiac crime scene, and also of Poste.
The Case BreakersThe Case Breakers pointed to Gary Francis Poste's distinctive scars as one reason why he might be the Zodiac killer. The Case Breakers also found connections to Poste within the Zodiac Killer's cryptic notes.

In 1969, after his second attack, "the Zodiac" called the police to report the crime himself and to claim responsibility for a previous double homicide. Though "the Zodiac" was never caught and the official investigation remains open, public interest has remained high.
However, Poste isn't the only suspect in the frame as the serial killer who claimed in menacing letters to newspapers in the 1970s that he had killed 37 people. The only suspect authorities ever publicly identified is Arthur Leigh Allen, a schoolteacher who was institutionalized in 1975 for child molestation.
The last known victim, a taxi driver, was shot in October 1969. The murders were the subject of intense investigation and media coverage, particularly because of the killer's taunting letters to newspapers and phone calls to police.
Earlier in the year, DNA evidence emerged that suggests we can identify the true identity of Jack the Ripper. A shawl found by the body of Catherine Eddowes that contains 'forensic stains' has been used to identify the killer as Aaron Kosminski, a 23-year-old barber from Poland.
The teenagers described the suspect to be 25 to 30 years old with a crew cut and standing approximately 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m) to 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) tall.
The largest of the unsolved Zodiac ciphers is the Zodiac 340 cipher. The Zodiac 340 cipher is a 340 character long cipher that Zodiac mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle. The main aim of this project is to try to decode the Zodiac 340 cipher by using genetic algorithms.
From the late 1960s to the early 1970s the Zodiac killer sent four coded letters. Of the four ciphers, only one has actually been solved. His letters were written in two parts. The first part was usually written in plain text, while the other was in cipher text, in which he claimed contained his identity.
This second cipher came to be known as the “340 Cipher,” and was sent in a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle in November of 1969. “I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME,” reads the message, according to David Oranchak, a member of the team which deciphered the cryptogram.
“The Zodiac cipher was almost certainly constructed by pencil and paper, but it was complex enough that it survived attacks for 51 years.” While the Zodiac's message has been decrypted, the identity of the killer remains an unsolved mystery.
