Nearly all types of cancer have the potential to metastasize, but whether they do depends on a number of factors. Metastatic tumors (metastases) can occur in three ways: They can grow directly into the tissue surrounding the tumor. A tumour can be either non cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). A benign tumour does not spread to other parts of the body. But a malignant tumour (cancer) can spread.

Chemotherapy does not cure metastatic colorectal cancer, but it can improve symptoms and prolong life. Sometimes both chemotherapy and surgery are recommended.
If you have signs or symptoms of metastases, your doctor will likely use local treatment (treatment directly to the cancer area) to relieve the symptoms and to control the disease at that spot. Radiation can shrink and help control specific spots where the cancer has spread.
