Research has found several factors that contribute to the problem. They include a tendency for reduced physical activity and poor nutrition. In addition, weight gain can result as a side effect of certain behavioral medicines.
Another study found that children with autism are up to 41% more likely to develop obesity. Of these children, those at the highest risk are girls, nonwhite children, and older children. Within the study, the prevalence of obesity was 22.2%.
Children with autism tend to gain weight rapidly in infancy and to have high levels of the fat hormone leptin, according to a new study1. Other studies have tied rapid weight gain in infancy to autism.
Boys with autism tend to be born smaller than typical peers – but then have faster growth and overtake them by the age of three, according to a new study. On average they had smaller heads, were shorter and weighed less at birth. After that they put on a growth spurt.

The investigator compared the birth patterns of 810 children with autism with those of 768 live birth controls and found that children with autism have an excess of March and August births. March birth has also been associated with increased risk of autism in studies conducted in Israel,10 Sweden, 11 and Denmark.
Children with ASD often need a hug, just like other children. Sometimes they need this much more than other children. But some children don't like to be touched. Respect their personal space.
Role of Growth Charts
Many studies have found that from a tenth to a third of children with autism have unusually large heads.

However, children with autism often have more chronic feeding problems that go beyond picky eating. This may mean the child won't eat an entire category of food such as proteins or vegetables.
On average, the boys with autism had a head circumference that was 1.2 centimeters smaller at birth than that of typical children. They were also about 4.8 centimeters shorter and about 0.2 kilograms lighter.
Autism is not caused by malnutrition or food-related challenges, but, for many people, there is a connection between autism and food. Research suggests that food-related challenges have a significant impact on many people who are diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous, behaviorally defined, neurodevelopmental disorder that has been modeled as a brain-based disease. The behavioral and cognitive features of ASD are associated with pervasive atypicalities in the central nervous system (CNS).
Young children may express more voiced than unvoiced laughter, as they haven't yet learned to purposely laugh. The symptoms listed below happen at a variety of ages, but they are all things that a child with autism may NOT do. These symptoms include: Child does not make eye contact (e.g. when being fed);
Developmental Delays in Children with Autism
Other children with autism may appear to develop alongside their typically developing peers during infancy, but then slow, stop developing, or regress as they get older.

A recent study, “Association Between Screen Time Exposure in Children at 1 Year of Age and Autism Spectrum Disorder at 3 Years of Age,” showed that longer durations of screen time among 1-year-old boys was “significantly associated” with autism spectrum disorder at 3 years old.
