A 3 month old formula fed baby typically takes 6-8 ounces per feed every 3-4 hours, and a breastfed baby will often take 4 ounces every 2-3 hours. This means that breastfed babies are more likely to wake up at night to eat, after 3-6 hours of sleep, compared to a formula fed baby.
"Our study found that although it is true that bottle-fed babies wake less often at night and sleep for longer stretches than babies who are nursing, there are no differences in total amount of sleep. And more importantly, six months later there are no differences in sleep skills.
At 3 months, a baby averages a total of 5 hours of sleep during daytime naps and 10 hours at night, usually with an interruption or two. Most babies this age sleep "through the night," meaning a 5-6 hour stretch. But every baby is different, so don't be surprised if your baby sleeps more or less than others.
Babies have shorter sleep cycles of deep and light sleep than adults and wake every 2-3 hours to feed and connect with mum. This frequent arousal from sleep, before a baby naturally starts to sleep longer, is thought to be protective against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Even if you are experiencing short naps, the EWS cycle will still be helpful. Feed your baby every time they wake, and focus on making it a full feed. The more they eat during the day, the less likely they are to wake to eat overnight.
There are several ways of re-settling baby. Hands-on settling is one option where you comfort your baby with gentle 'ssshh' sounds, gentle rhythmic patting, rocking or stroking until baby is calm or asleep.

Over the first few weeks and months, the time between feedings will start to get longer. On average, most exclusively breastfed babies will feed about every 2 to 4 hours. Sleep experts agree that adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night to function properly. Newborns, however, sleep about 16-20 hours in a 24-hour cycle, but this sleep is disrupted with waking every 20 minutes to few hours - making it virtually impossible for a new mother to get those 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Breastmilk at night
This cluster feeding in the early months may go on late into the evening when you were hoping you would be asleep, which can naturally feel exhausting. Overnight, your prolactin levels – the hormone designed to support milk production – are at their highest.
Breast milk naturally contains melatonin, a hormone associated with sleep. Infants cannot produce this hormone on their own and rely on the secretion in breast milk to help regulate their circadian rhythms. Formula does not typically include melatonin.
From a developmental perspective, babies are able to sleep through the night — defined as a six- to eight-hour stretch — without eating when they're between 4 and 6 months old. In this age range, most babies reach the 12- to 13-pound mark, the weight where they no longer metabolically need nighttime feedings.
What Causes Babies to Be Fussy At Night? Newborns usually need to “cluster feed” at night time. If Mom is breastfeeding her supply is lower in the early evening and so babies often need to nurse more frequently during this time to stock them up for a longer stretch of sleep.
How to stop breastfeeding to sleep. Try introducing new sleep associations or a new bed time routine. Replacing breastfeeding with a bath, warm drink, reading a story or rocking your baby to sleep takes more effort, and bed time may take longer that way than by breastfeeding, but it works for some families.
So if your baby really is hungry, they usually won't go back to sleep very easily until they've been fed. If they nod off after five or ten minutes of crying, that's a pretty reliable sign that they were just looking for some help getting back to sleep and not actually in need of a feed.
Cues That Tell the Baby Is Hungry

If your baby's circadian rhythm puts their natural wake time at 6 a.m., 3 a.m. would be the approximate time that their body stops releasing melatonin and begins to release cortisol. When the release of cortisol corresponds with the end of a sleep cycle, your baby will more than likely wake.
Infants under 6 months old can usually sleep anywhere from three to eight hours at night, depending on age and stage. And babies between 4 and 6 months old are developmentally able to sleep through the night without a feeding, but whether they do is another story.
By four months, most babies begin to show some preferences for longer sleep at night. By six months, many babies can go for five to six hours or more without the need to feed and will begin to "sleep through the night."
A study published on-line today (24 April 2009) in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found evidence that the lower protein content of breast milk compared to formula milk explains the slower growth rates seen in breast fed infants.

Through sensory inputs from the skin, joints and muscles their proprioception tells them their body is in a different place in relation to their environment. Understandably, a sudden change in position and movement can wake a person up.
Many lactation professionals agree that day three can be the hardest for moms. Breastfeeding is a whole new experience and it takes a little getting used to. Perfecting your baby's latch doesn't usually happen right away and it is important to remember that it may take some patience to establish.
