Speaking of the fit of the front of the diaper, the top should sit just underneath your baby's belly button (or umbilical stump) without covering it. And the diaper shouldn't be too far below their belly button.
Instead, expose the stump to air to help dry out the base. Keep the front of your baby's diaper folded down to avoid covering the stump. Stick with sponge baths. While there's no harm in getting the stump wet, sponge baths might make it easier to keep the stump dry.
If the diaper isn't fully covering your baby's bottom, choose a bigger size. If your baby regularly gets diaper rash, it may be because the diaper is too small and doesn't keep the moisture away from their skin. The diaper may be too small if your baby shows signs of distress (for example, pulling at the diaper).

When your baby is born the umbilical cord is cut and there is a stump left. The stump should dry and fall off by the time your baby is 5 to 15 days old. Keep the stump clean with gauze and water only. Sponge bathe the rest of your baby, as well.
There's no way yet to prevent nuchal cords or unwind them from a baby's neck in the womb. But when a baby is born with a nuchal cord, your doctor will know what to do because it happens so frequently. The colored sections of the ultrasound show that the umbilical cord is under the baby's chin.
Clothes should be comfortable, soft and easy to take care of. Stretchy jumpsuits that fasten at the front are best, as well as tops with envelope necks, which are easier to get over your baby's head. Jumpsuits with zips can make dressing your baby quick and easy too. Clothes made from cotton are a good choice.
Only give your newborn sponge baths until the stump of the umbilical cord falls off, which usually happens by about one or two weeks of age. If it remains beyond that time, there may be other issues at play. See the baby's doctor if the cord has not dried up and fallen off by the time the baby is two months old.
How long does it take for the belly button to heal after the umbilical cord falls off? The skin underneath the stump may be a little red when the dried stump first falls off, but it should soon heal—usually within two weeks. Speak to your healthcare provider if it doesn't heal in this timeframe.

"After the cord falls off, the stump may be moist and have bit of bleeding around the edges," says Gritchen. You can "simply wash with soap and water and pat dry," she adds. After the belly button area is completely healed and dry, you can begin a normal bath rountine for your baby.
Many suggest transitioning to underwear towards the end of the three days, while Fellom recommends waiting a full three months and having them go commando until then. Most experts agree to avoid diapers, pull-ups or even padded underwear marketed as “training pants” once you start three-day potty training.
You don't want to let babies sit in a soiled diaper for too long, so it's best to change them as soon as you get a whiff of what's happened (otherwise, poop can irritate your baby's skin or even lead to bladder infections, especially in girls).
Dispose of the dirty diaper in your airsick bag. Once your baby is diapered and dressed, you can put the bag in the bathroom garbage. Don't ask a flight attendant to dispose of your baby's dirty diaper — the Food and Drug Administration prohibits attendants from handling garbage of any kind while serving food.
