Dogs bark to communicate with other dogs and persons. It does not have a meaning like the words of the human language, but it represents a type of communication that reports the emotional state of the dog who is barking. We are talking about the bark, one of the key features of dogs.
Despite a limited vocabulary, dogs and babies communicate with us. They may not be verbal creatures, but they manage to “speak” back to us. Even without an extensive vocabulary, they make us understand their whines, cries, and coos especially when combined with their own special body language.

Attention Barking
This very persistent, high pitched bark is often directed towards the owner/members of the household and/or other dogs. It is exactly what it sounds like. Your dog trying to get or “demand” your attention, food, play, walk, outside etc.
If your dog is emitting 2-4 barks with pauses in between (frequency & duration) in a low pitch (pitch), this typically means a “Call the pack, there is danger” message from your little one. He notices something strange going on, is playing close attention to it, and is scared that the pack is in danger.
The woof or ruff – These are your typical playful barks intended to greet you or others. Woof barks are short in duration and have a mid- to lower pitch to them. They are your standard bark to say “hello” and “hey.” This comfortable bark means all is well in your dog's world.
Common greeting behaviours include smiling, licking, leaning, jumping and excessive tail wagging. This means the dog is friendly and excited to greet their owners or visitors. While behaviours like jumping and licking can be entertaining and loving, it's not always welcomed.
Any noise, no matter how slight, can stimulate a barking response – for example rustling leaves, a banging window, lightning or thunder, or a ring of the doorbell. Dogs also bark because of behavioural issues. For example, a dog may bark out of fear, boredom, or when they're anxious to be left alone.
Overall, dogs are complex creatures that think about a wide range of things, including social relationships, their physical environment, daily routine, physical needs, and health and well-being.
As social animals, dogs choose the person or people who give them plenty of love, attention, and positive experiences. Let your dog be a dog and enjoy hanging out with and being in that person's presence, whether it's you or someone else. But don't give up on being one of the favorites!
Ignore your dog or leave the room completely if she is barking at you for attention. When the barking stops, return and ask her for a “sit” or another easy behavior. If she can do so without barking, reward her with the resource she seeks. If she starts barking again, walk away and ignore her.
If you believe your dog is barking simply to get your attention, try to ignore them. Regular exercise and the use of puzzle toys can keep your dog occupied during a work call or when you're watching TV.
Don't Respond to Barking Dogs
Many dogs will bark to get your attention, ask for food, or to tell you to open the door or let them out of the crate. Don't respond. Wait until your dog is quiet to give them what they want.

Your dog wants to play when it barks
You will know when your dog is barking playfully, usually accompanied by a wagging tail and possibly jumping up. This can occur when meeting people or when they have their favourite toy.
Although dogs can't identify themselves in the mirror, they still have some level of self-awareness and ace other self-recognition tests. They can recognize their own odor, and recall memories of specific events, Earth.com reports.
Barking in your dog's face can be confusing, stressful, or even be seen as threatening. That confusion or frustration leads to big reactions such as your dog baring teeth or trying to get away, which can be seen in many of the viral videos.
