You know the look of pure bliss in your horse's eyes when you're currying the underside of his belly. Tummy rubs are the best, but when an itch comes up and there's no human around to scratch it, sad times. Sometimes a horse has got to do what a horse has got to do, from getting resourceful in the pasture…
Experts say when this happens it is either they groom themselves, relieve pain or discomfort, for pleasure, or because of an injury.
That is the tail, legs, flank, and belly of the horse. These areas are particularly sensitive to most horses and they usually don't like strangers touching them in these places. These areas are most likely to cause a horse to stomp his foot or kick out at you.
For a lot of dogs, belly rubs feel incredibly soothing and relaxing. This calming sensation triggers a specific reaction in their brain that responds to hair follicle stimulation.
Horses are so sensitive to touch that they react to pressures too light for people to feel. Horses are prey animals, and are very sensitive to anything touching their bodies. Innately, they will react by quickly moving away from something touching them.
He may nibble at your shoulders or head, lay his head on your shoulders, or nudge you in the back, like a mini “back massage.” When a horse shows you respect, that also indicates that he likes you. They will accept you as their leader and do what they are told, while not running over or cramping you.
To comfort themselves, they stay close to you, rubbing their face on you, marking you all over again, and letting you know that they're your family. They try to comfort themselves.
But they're still different species with different needs. And one of those differences is how they react to being touched on the stomach. Cats will often hiss or scratch when you touch their tummies because it's an area where they feel vulnerable—especially if it's a human doing the touching!
A belly rub can release oxytocin (from both you and your dog), which is also known as the “love” or “feel-good” hormone. It can increase the feeling of closeness between you and your dog. So now that you know how much good just one belly rub session can do, you can both enjoy the time even more!

Never approach a horse until he is standing with his head toward you. As you approach a stall, speak to the horse, so the horse knows that a person is near and is not startled. A startled horse will want to flee and run away as this is their natural instinct.
But he also shows a lot of calming signals: He half closes his eyes, chews with his tongue out, turn his head. He might also offer all kinds of other behaviours that he has learned (“I don't know what you want, but I know this, maybe that's what you mean”).
Horses also nicker gently to their people in anticipation of something they like and want, such as food, and some will nicker when their people arrive at the yard – usually because they associate 'their person' with something good about to happen. It's a beautiful sound for us to hear.
Sarah Clark, an equine behavioural consultant in Essex, who runs her own behavioural consultancy business, explains: “Horses roll for pleasure when they are relaxed and feel it is safe to do so. Similar to when a person yawns, rolling is evidently contagious, and you can often see more than one horse roll in sequence.”
Experts in dog behavior believe that, in general, dogs do not like being embraced. However, every dog has a unique personality. Some may dislike hugs more strongly than others, and some may actually adore them. The closest thing our furry family members do to a hug is something referred to as 'standing over'.
Dogs are good at reading us, and they usually know when we are being affectionate, such as when we kiss them. Because they love affection from us, most dogs do like being kissed. However, they don't like the act of being kissed but rather that we give them attention and show affection.
If your dog puts his paw on you, it can be his way of saying I love you. We pet our dogs to show our love and affection. Turns out they do the same. By putting his paw on you whilst you are petting him, he is expanding contact and reciprocating affection back to you.
We pet our pups to show our love and affection. Turns out they do the same. "By putting his paw on you whilst you are stroking him, he is further extending contact and reciprocating affection back," writes Rebecca Forrest, an assistance dog trainer, for The Dog Clinic.
It is not a natural sign of affection for a dog, so it can pose problems, which leads to jumping. One way a dog sees a hug is a threat. You are close to someone and your arms are wrapped around them. Your dog might think, “How on earth will they escape?!
Sometimes, your dog will bury their head in you to be close to your comforting scent. At the same time, your dog may want to be close to you to feel safer. They feel protected when they're close to you, and they know that they are close enough to keep you safe as well.
Apples and carrots are traditional favorites. You can safely offer your horse raisins, grapes, bananas, strawberries, cantaloupe or other melons, celery, pumpkin, and snow peas. Most horses will chew these treats before swallowing, but horses that gulp large pieces of a fruit or vegetable have a risk of choking.
Horses exhibit higher heart rates when separated from a human, but don't show any preference for their owners over complete strangers, the team discovered. Swedish researchers started their work with the theory that positive reinforcement training on a horse was more likely to lead to them forming a strong attachment.
Take time to simply talk to your horse every now and then. Let them get used to your voice and something to listen to. You'll notice that when you talk, their ears constantly follow you, even if they have no idea of what you're saying. If they're ever put in a stressful situation, you can talk to them.
