Maggots scrape dead tissue with mouth hooks then spew a stew of enzymes to liquefy, swallow, and digest it.
Many species of fly larvae that might be accidentally ingested with food cannot survive in the gastrointestinal environment. In such cases, although the dead larvae may be recognized on subsequent stool examinations, true host infestation is never established, and the condition is properly termed pseudomyiasis (5).
Accidentally ingesting maggots does not generally cause any lasting harm. However, if a person has ingested maggots through eating spoiled food, they may be at risk of food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning can range from very mild to serious, and they can sometimes last for several days.
Preliminary studies using a vital dye showed that food ingested by the maggots passed through their intestine within 1–1.5 h.
Maggots need to eat as much as they can in order to store energy before they become a pupa and later transform into an adult fly. These maggots are usually born on top of those rotten products so they don't have to go on their own to find food.

"The lifespan of a maggot is between 15 to 30 days, so if you want to get rid of them before they evolve into flies, you can try covering their food source with salt to eliminate their access to water," David says.
In most instances, spotting a fly on your food doesn't mean you need to throw it out. Contact with a maggot can lead to low allergic reactions to high fever attacks. It can cause diarrhea and symptoms similar to food poisoning such as vomiting and feeling nauseous can also be observed. There is one common infection known that is mainly caused by the maggots.

Over several days they will eat, poop, grow, and sometimes even molt.
Despite their antibacterial activities, maggots themselves remain contaminated with bacteria (most probably around their mouthparts) and they are able to shed them to the environment (most probably together with their saliva).
Maggots are attracted to rotting and dirty things. In the common household, maggots are mostly attracted by leftover food or decomposing perishable goods. Maggots are a sign of dirty, polluted environment or unattended, spoiled food and exposed garbage bins. This means, even if your place is well maintained and clean, if there are garbage bins or food sources that flies can access, maggots can appear.
Dead maggots sink slowly and can't crawl away allowing you to place your feed accurately.
These hatch within 48 hours into smooth, white legless maggot larvae and after 3 moults mature into pupae. Approximately 3-4 weeks after this they develop into adult flies.
The larvae of flies feed on the corpse and moult into three instars. There is rapid loss in the corpse weight and the post feeding maggots begin to leave the corpse. In order to find a suitable site for pupariation they migrate some distance away from the corpse. This period is known as the wandering stage.
Given enough time on top of your food, flies may take the opportunity to lay their eggs in it. You will not be able to see the eggs, but they are there. And within a few days' time, maggots will appear in the food. That's both a gross thing to see and total waste of the food.
Nothing is going to happen to you. You can only get maggots if a fly laid eggs. Most of the common flies lay eggs only on rotting meat or other rotting garbage, so there is no way on earth a maggot could hatch if no egg was laid. If there were eggs in the water, they would drown.
Just make sure its deep enough to not smell and thus attract new living flies to the area. If you just want to throw out the contents, I would use a garbage bag, kitchen size (13gal) or even a bit larger.
Instead of popping into the bait and tackle shop right before you go fishing, learn how to store live maggots at home. If you chill them properly, you can keep in them in a cold fridge for up to 2 weeks.
While larvae are attracted towards olfactory stimuli, they are strongly repelled by light and seek for dark or less light-exposed surroundings.
Each female fly can lay up to 500 eggs in several batches of 75 to 150 eggs over a three to four day period. The number of eggs produced is a function of female size which, itself, is principally a result of larval nutrition. Maximum egg production occurs at intermediate temperatures, 25 to 30°C.
