Morning people tend to live longer than night owls. But a new report suggests it may have less to do with sleep and more to do with what happens when you're awake. Researchers in Finland found mortality risk in night owls was mainly tied to smoking and alcohol.
The research, published in Nature Communications, found that being a morning person is causally associated with better mental health, but does not affect the risk of obesity or the risk of Type 2 diabetes as some previous research had suggested.

Comparing definite evening type to definite morning type, the associations were strongest for psychological disorders, diabetes, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal/abdominal disorders and respiratory disorders. Definite evening types were also more likely to die from any cause.
They also have higher IQs according to The Independent. Unfortunately, night owls have slightly lower academic scores than early risers (by about 8%). The reason for all these differences is likely due to the difference in brain chemistry between late night creative types and early morning larks.
