Wearable devices might include patches or wrist bands that aim to repel mosquitoes and often have botanical products in or on them. These products don't offer effective protection from mosquitoes.
Wristbands
These wearable repellent devices are marketed as being safer because you don't have to rub anything on your skin. But scientists who have tested these products have found them to be ineffective.
Yes: DEET. A repellent with DEET tells mosquitos to buzz off loud and clear. You'll need one with at least 20% DEET to protect your skin for several hours at a time, although more than 50% doesn't work any better (kids should use 10%-30%).
They don't work. More accurately, there's no scientific evidence to support the claims that the ultrasonic technology employed in mosquito-repelling devices actually keeps mosquitoes away. In fact, the opposite is true.
You'll receive over 250 hours of protection with each band! OUTDOOR PROTECTION - Shield yourself from itchy bites with these mosquito repellent bracelets for kids and adults.
I found it comfortable to wear due to the adjustable velcro strap. So effective that I continued to wear it while sleeping, although just placing it on your bedside table may be just as effective.
Mosquitoes hate the smell of lavender, citronella, clove, peppermint, basil, cedarwood, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemongrass and rosemary. They also hate smells such as smoke, for further insight, see our exploration on, does smoke keep mosquitoes away?
Use 0.5% permethrin to treat clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents) or buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear. Permethrin is an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes. Permethrin-treated clothing provides protection after multiple washings.
Even better, the bracelets are water-resistant, so you can wear them to the beach, lake, water park, or any other place where they may get wet and not have to worry about them not working.
There is no scientific evidence anything you can eat or drink will prevent mosquitoes biting you. You can still enjoy your gin and tonic, bananas, or vegemite on toast – just don't expect the mosquitoes to stop biting!
Citronella oil is a natural mosquito repellent that will kill mosquitoes and drive them out of your house. Look for citronella candles or use citronella essential oil in your vaporizer or oil diffuser.
Essential oils like lavender, tea tree, neem, citronella, eucalyptus and mint oil work as powerful mosquito repellents. Mix a few drops of any of these essential oils in some water, add it to a spray bottle and spray it around the home.
Ben's 100 Tick and Insect Repellent Pump (2-Pack)
This Ben's repellent has a 100 percent concentration of DEET, making it the most potent mosquito repellent on this list. Unlike most DEET products, this doesn't have a strong odor after application, though it still has some greasiness.
Bugables by PIC Citronella Coil Wristbands release a citronella scent that lasts for up to 200 hours that works to repel mosquitoes. It can be resealed in its original packaging after use.
Mosquito bracelets and stickers are wearable products that contain materials that are said to be effective at repelling mosquitoes. So instead of spraying a mosquito repellent on yourself like DEET, you (supposedly) just wear a small item and it keeps mosquitoes away.
Mosquitoes may bite you more for various reasons, including your blood type, your clothes, your breathing, or even the bacteria living on your skin.
Deter Insects
We may be fans of Vicks, but insects decidedly are not. Dab a bit on your arms, legs, neck, or other areas of exposed skin to keep bugs (including mosquitoes) at bay, however, it is not as effective at preventing bites as a commercial insect repellant.
Unlike many other types of mosquito guards, Mosquito Magnet® not only attracts and kills mosquitoes, but it also helps to limit their repopulation. Mosquito Magnet® has been scientifically proven to disrupt the breeding cycle of mosquitoes, causing their population to dwindle over time.
The best colors for repelling mosquitoes, according to researchers at the University of Washington, are white, green, blue and purple. That isn't because mosquitoes don't like these colors, but because they reflect heat and light, which mosquitoes really don't like, which is why they start to emerge at dusk.
Strict night-time routines: Apply your repellents just before bed on all exposed areas and don't add any perfumes or night creams or after sun lotions on top of it. This will mask chemicals like DEET. Put lotions and potions on first. Let them absorb, then add repellents last thing.
