Swedes with two Swedish-born parents are more likely to marry someone born abroad than with second-generation immigrants. The level of education is also higher among those who marry someone born abroad, reveals a study of Swedish register data.

If we look at the population of those aged over 20, a total of 43.9 percent were married. Women are on average younger than men when they marry for the first time. The mean age for persons marrying for the first time was 33.0 years for women and 35.7 years for men. Marrying later in life is another trend.
That the divorce rates are higher in Sweden may not be solely due to women's higher workforce participation. In many patriarchal countries, divorce is less accepted, and it can be legally more difficult to get divorced. In Sweden, on the other hand, divorce is socially more acceptable, and more feasible.
In total, nearly 24,000 divorces were registered in Sweden in 2021.
How to get divorced in Sweden. To get a divorce in Sweden is a fast and easy process. If you both agree and don't have children you apply to the court together, pay a fee of 900 SEK and the court will approve your divorce. If you don't agree on the divorce you can always apply alone.
The most common age of marriage in 2022 was 30 to 34 years of age. In this age group, over 28,000 individuals got married that year. More than half of all marriages in Sweden in 2022 were among individuals from 25 to 39 years.

Grounds for a divorce in Sweden
Other reasons for divorce include the fact that the marriage was forced, one spouse is under the age of 18, the couple is related closely, or one spouse is already married or in a registered partnership with another person.
For divorce (see Table 2), in 2021 the lowest crude rates in the EU were registered in Malta (0.6 divorces per 1 000 persons) and Slovenia (1.1). By contrast, divorce rates were highest in Lithuania (2.8 divorces per 1 000 persons), Latvia (2.5) and Sweden (2.3).
