Silas's true face is Stefan's. Silas reveals to Stefan that the universe had to be in balance with the immortal Silas and Amara, and thus created doppelgangers (i.e. Stefan, Elena, Katherine, etc.) that were mortal and could die throughout the 2,000 years.
The changes in Silas' character are never arbitrary. They have roots; they develop naturally from his past. The betrayal by William Dane costs Silas his faith in men, and the betrayal of the drawing of the lots takes his faith in a just God.
Although they were "Soulmates," Qetsiyah made sure that Amara and Silas would never see each other again. Qetsiyah made sure Silas stayed on the Other Side with her forever, while being eternally separated from Amara.
