Waiting this amount of time gives the gum tissue ample time to heal. Furthermore, this waiting period guarantees the dentures will be the ideal fit. There is no reason to worry about your gums during the waiting period. The dentist will provide you with temporary immediate dentures as the gum tissue heals.
Luckily, this isn't the case, and at no point during the process will you walk around without teeth. Before we take teeth out for dentures, we premake the dentures with specialised measurements we take while planning for the extractions.
However, after removing the affected teeth, it can take some time to fabricate the permanent, custom dentures. That is why it is advisable to use immediate or temporary dentures while waiting.
Essix retainer
While waiting for implant supported dentures, the dentist can place a clear, plastic retainer in the person's mouth. This goes over the top of the remaining natural teeth. Where this is a space, the dentist will replace the missing tooth with one painted on the retainer.
Getting a temporary denture is a relatively simple process, and it can provide you with the confidence you need while you wait for your permanent implants.
The dentist will provide you with temporary immediate dentures as the gum tissue heals. Once the tissues are fully healed, the time is right to add dentures to your mouth. In general, it usually takes between six and eight weeks following the tooth extraction for dentures to be placed. However, each patient is unique.
Post-Operative Instructions
Immediate dentures are removable temporary dentures that were placed during your extraction procedure. Please keep the denture(s) in your mouth for the first 2 days and nights, removing them only for cleaning after 24 hours, unless otherwise specified by your dentist.
A dental examination
During this examination, the dentist will search for any signs of infection, tooth decay, previous dental work that can hinder the denture process and search for any other teeth that may need removal prior to placing the dentures.
Instead of relying on your jawbone ridge and gums for support, implant-retained dentures attach to dental implants. Dental implants are small, threaded posts that surgeons place in your jawbone to replace missing teeth roots. Like traditional dentures, implant-retained dentures are removable.
Wearing immediate dentures right away over extractions normally is no more uncomfortable than the extractions alone. Discomfort is managed with proper anesthesia and pain medication. Immediate dentures act like a Band Aid bandage, holding tissues together and protecting them during healing.
If you are thinking about getting dentures, you may want to consider an immediate denture. Even if you need to have a lot of teeth extracted, you can receive this type of denture immediately after extraction. Immediate dentures are not only aesthetically pleasing.
They feel big – Some people feel that their new dentures are too wide and bulky, making them look like a horse. In reality, this is not so. This illusion usually doesn't have to do with the dentures, but rather is due to the mouth still being swollen.
When it comes to private treatment, costs vary greatly depending on the number and type of teeth extracted. As a guide, you can expect to pay £50-£140 for a simple tooth extraction and £100-£300 for a surgical extraction. Then, you'll need to add on the cost of temporary dentures at £450-£1,000 per arch.
If you have loose teeth, periodontal disease, or severe tooth pain, you may need to get your teeth removed and replaced with dentures and/or implants.
5. You have one or more missing teeth. Experts recommend that people who have lost more than two or three teeth seek some sort of prosthesis to prevent excessive pressure on the remaining teeth.
According to our research, the cost of dentures in Australia is estimated to be anywhere between $2,500 to $5,500 in the year 2023. This considerable difference in pricing for a few reasons that we dive into later.
Dentures are Not Inevitable for Everyone
However, although getting dentures is actually quite common, not everyone will have to have them. If your teeth last until the end of your life, there is no reason to get dentures.
Number of Missing Teeth
If you are missing many teeth in a series or all of your teeth, it would be impractical to get implants for each of them. In such a case, dentures are your best pick. Another scenario can be if you are missing 3 – 4 teeth in a row. A dental bridge would most effectively serve the purpose here.
The reason for removing dentures is said to be that the anaesthetised patient could swallow them or that they could become dislodged and cause respiratory obstruction. Although we accept that this is possible with partial plates, it is unlikely with a full set of dentures.
How many teeth can I have extracted at once? There is no limit to the number of teeth you can have extracted at once.
An immediate denture is initially more expensive than a conventional denture because additional time is needed for construction. A surgical stent (a guide for recontouring tissues after extraction) is often necessary and more follow-up visits are needed for adjustments and re-fitting.
Getting all your teeth pulled and replaced with dentures is indeed possible. However, advances in dentistry currently make available more options to replace missing teeth, including traditional and implant-supported dentures.
