If you've ever wondered if bodily functions like going to the bathroom continue while in labor, the truth is, yes, peeing and pooping and other messy bodily functions absolutely can happen during labor. And not only can pooping happen during labor, but having a bowel movement during labor can actually be a good thing.
Peeing on Yourself
That's because during a vaginal delivery, the pelvic floor muscles get stretched out. Until they start to tighten up again—a process you can speed along with Kegel exercises—you might have some leaks. In addition, with an epidural, you can temporarily not be able to feel that your bladder is full.
In labour women should be encouraged to pass urine at regular intervals, 2 hourly or before top-up of their epidural, if they have one in place. If the woman cannot pass urine after a second attempt, an intermittent catheter should be used to empty the bladder.
Most women will feel increased pressure in their perineum, rectum, and low back at this stage. For many women, the rectal pressure feels the same as having a bowel movement. As the baby's head begins to appear, you may feel a stretching or burning sensation.
Pushing your baby out
When your cervix is fully dilated, your baby will move further down the birth canal towards the entrance to your vagina. You may get an urge to push that feels a bit like you need to poo. You can push during contractions whenever you feel the urge. You may not feel the urge to push immediately.
The most common description of the level of pain experienced was extreme menstrual cramps (45 percent), while 16 percent said it was like bad back pain and 15 percent compared it to a broken bone.
But 1 in 5 had a different take and said that pushing and post-delivery were the most painful. The survey also notes that most participants compared the worst pain to "extreme menstrual cramps," "bad back pain," and "a broken bone."
How long does it take to push baby out? In all, delivery generally takes 30 minutes to an hour, but it could take as long as three hours, especially in first babies (second and subsequent babies usually pop out a lot faster), or as short as a few minutes.
While a handful of things might hurt worse than labor, the significance of the pain caused by giving birth should not be minimized. And though labor can be a painful process, certain things can contribute to or increase the discomfort felt. Anxiety – fear or anxiety during childbirth can increase pain.
If you're 4cm dilated and feeling a strong continuous urge to push (very unlikely) - then that's not ideal…often any pushing urge this early passes if you change position. But if you're close to 10 centimeters dilated the research suggests it's not an issue.
Not being able to open your bladder, or going into “retention” can sometimes happen with childbirth. If it isn't caught quickly the bladder can overfill, overstretch and become injured. Sometimes this leads to kidney injuries too.
In the first few days after giving birth, you may feel pain or burning when you urinate (pee). Or you may try to urinate but find that you can't. Sometimes you may not be able to stop urinating. This is called incontinence.
How long does postpartum incontinence last? It can take a few weeks or even months for urinary incontinence after pregnancy to go away and for you to regain complete bladder control, though there are steps you can take to get it back faster. However, some women may experience urinary incontinence for longer.
During the first 3 months, it's normal to leak when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or lift your baby. It's also normal to urinate more frequently or to have strong sudden urges. After the initial 3 months, normal urinary control should return.
If you had a spontaneous (normal) vaginal birth, the maternity staff will encourage you to pass urine four to six hours following it. They will ask you to let them know when you have passed urine and this will be recorded in your maternity notes.
The epidural will simply numb the sensations of birth and/or pooping, and you will not realize that you've pooped.
Lochia is the vaginal discharge you have after giving birth. It contains a mix of blood, mucus and uterine tissue. It has a stale, musty odor like menstrual period discharge and can last several weeks.
With an epidural, you might be able to feel contractions — they just won't hurt — and you'll be able to push effectively. There is some evidence that epidurals can speed the first stage of labor by allowing the mother to relax.
What's the ring of fire in pregnancy? The ring of fire refers to the burning, stinging sensation you may feel when your baby's head presses on and stretches your vaginal opening. (You may not feel it if you have an epidural.) Though it's painful, the ring of fire lasts just a few minutes.
Discourage more than three to four pushing efforts with each contraction and more than 6 to 8 seconds of each pushing effort (avoid counting to 10 with each pushing effort). Take steps to maintain a reassuring fetal heart rate (FHR) pattern while pushing.
Directed pushing, also called “purple pushing,” is when pregnant people are instructed to hold their breath, bear down, and push for approximately 10 seconds at a time.
Most pregnant people begin pushing once their cervix dilates (widens) to about 10 centimeters. This is the beginning of the second stage of labor, when your baby starts moving out of your birth canal. But some people may not feel the urge to push for one to two hours after the second stage begins.
Pushing can be one of the most intense and exhausting parts of the labor and delivery process—and it can take anywhere from several minutes, up to a few hours to push your baby out.
This can lead to decreased fetal heart rate and sometimes to interventions by the maternal fetal medicine team, to ensure the safe birth of the baby. Pushing – especially directed pushing – also increases the force placed on the pelvic floor of the birthing woman.
Visceral labour pain occurs during the early first stage and the second stage of childbirth. With each uterine contraction, pressure is transmitted to the cervix causing stretching and distension and activating excitatory nocioceptive afferents. These afferents innervate the endocervix and lower segment from T10 – L1.
