This is a common question, but really, there's no clear cut answer. At the end of the day, it will simply come down to what works better for your floor plan. This might mean all couples sitting side by side, all couples sitting opposite each other, or a mixture of the two.
Grouping them by table number, while cute, makes finding your name and assigned table complicated, and slows down the seating process. Unmarried couples or married couples with different last names are typically listed together and alphabetized by the first person's last name.
Classically, the groom sits to the bride's right and the best man sits to her left. The maid of honor sits to the groom's right. Depending on how large the table is, the other attendants can also be seated near the couple.
Partners. It is usual for partners to be seated opposite rather than next to each other and this has many things to recommend it. There is the security of being able to see and talk to each other without the people on either side feeling excluded.
The best man or woman and the maid or man of honor usually will be placed right next to the couple, and the rest of the party will take the other seats.
At a round or square table, the head seat is wherever the host wants to sit. At a rectangular table, the head seats are at the ends of the table. The most important guests occupy the right-hand seats, with the second most important guests, if any, occupying the left-hand seats.
The couple should always sit beside each other. By doing so, awkward situations and misunderstanding can be eliminated. This also helps in whisper things to your partner which is quite impossible while sitting opposite to each other. That will be a table conversation otherwise.
Close relatives and honored guests, like the bride's personal attendant, and their families should be seated at the front of the wedding reception. Again, the bride's honored guests should be seated to the left and the groom's to the right.
Keep Your Friends Close
Seat them with their dates and a group of other mutual friends. They should be seated at the third-best tables in the room: The first is your sweetheart table, the second-best table is for your parents, and the third nearest table is for your wedding party.
Should a seating chart list names alphabetically by guests' first names or last names? For clarity and ease, it's best to arrange guests' names in alphabetical order by last name, followed by his or her assigned table number.
Where should parents and grandparents of the bride and groom sit? Depending on the size and shape of tables you have, it's common to have a family table where the bride and groom's parents and grandparents sit together. Or, each set of parents can host their own table and be seated with close family and friends.
How and where students are seated can have a positive impact on student behaviour, academic performance and class participation. Studies have also found that students perform better in seats that are allocated to them as opposed to choosing where they sit themselves.
The newlyweds should be seated at the centre of the top table, surrounded by their special guests. Historically, the parents of the couple, as did the best man and maid of honour, sat at the top table. The bride is usually seated to the right of the groom. Same-sex couples are free to select their own seats.
Unbreakable Rule #1: RSVP Promptly
If you're one of the chosen few to be invited, make sure you respond promptly. Many wedding invitations will include a deadline to reply. Prompt RSVPs are important because wedding venues and vendors require a firm headcount ahead of time.
According to tradition, the bride's side is to the left of the aisle when facing the altar, while the groom's side is to the right. If you don't have a preference for where to sit, you can fill in an empty seat on either side of the aisle. Guests of honor may be assigned a special seat.
The parents of the bride always sit in the first pew or row on the left, facing where the ceremony will be held; the groom's parents sit in the first row on the right. At same-sex marriage ceremonies, the couple might assign each family a side, and seat guests on "Bill's side" or "Kevin's side" accordingly.
In Christian ceremonies, the bride's guests sit on the left side of the aisle (if you're looking at the altar), and the groom's will sit on the right. In Jewish ceremonies, a bride's guests will sit on the right, while the groom's sit on the left (the exact opposite of a Christian ceremony).

He'll Get Closer
You might notice an attempt to get a little physically closer to you. Men who are interested may try to close the distance by: choosing to sit next to you at a restaurant, instead of across from you.
The overwhelming majority said they prefer to face loved ones rather than sit side-by-side — “same-siders,” restaurant professionals call them, and that follows standard etiquette advice.

The wife of the man of highest rank sits to the left of the host. (If the man is unmarried, the woman of highest rank takes this seat.)
Enter Politely
If there is a host, they will lead when entering the restaurant, followed by the lady, then followed by the gentleman. Traditionally, if there's no host, the gentleman takes the lead, walks in first, and pulls away the chair for the lady so she can sit.
