If you have a Consumer or Business Green, Gold or Platinum Card, your Card does not have a credit limit. Instead, your Card has no preset spending limit unless you have been previously notified otherwise. No preset spending limit means the spending limit is flexible.
Because your Card is a Charge Card, rather than a Credit Card, you pay your balance in full each month. As a Charge Card, you'll have the financial flexibility of no pre-set spending limit on purchases, which provides you the opportunity to maximize your Membership Rewards points earned.
You can Log on to Online Services to access information on your Card account, including your credit limit information or check your available credit limit on the Amex App. You may also refer to your account statement to check the credit limit on your Credit card.
There are no pre-set spending limits on the American Express® Charge Card. You can spend as much as you've shown us you can afford. Your spending limit is based on factors including your current spending patterns, payment history, credit record and financial resources.
You can request a credit limit increase by calling the number on the back of your Amex credit card or 1-800-528-4800 (for personal cards). Once you call, expect to answer questions about why you want the increase and your income, employment status and mortgage/rent payments.
While American Express probably won't ask to verify your income, it's not a good idea to lie about your income on an application. In fact, providing false information on a credit card application is against federal law. Therefore, you're much better off being honest when applying for an American Express credit card.
American Express® Gold Card

The American Express Gold Card is considered one of the best travel rewards cards thanks to the numerous food and travel perks that appeal to big spenders who can afford its $250 annual fee. It offers generous ongoing rewards for airfare purchases and spending at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets.
You must pay in full, by the Payment Due Date, all charges that are not added to a Pay Over Time, Cash Advance, or Plan balance. We will begin charging interest on cash advances on the transaction date.
American Express (Amex) does not require proof of income when you apply for a credit card. However, Amex may conduct a soft inquiry into your credit report to check your creditworthiness. This means they will look at your credit score and other information, but they don't require actual proof of your income.
The American Express® Gold Card is our top-rated travel card. The card is made out of stainless steel and weighs 15 grams. Cardholders will have the ability to pay with a tap of their card at select merchants thanks to the card's contactless feature.
The Platinum card is geared for people who travel frequently. It has more travel perks than the Gold card. Rewards points can be used for merchandise, gift cards, dining, shopping, entertainment, or for use at the Amex travel website.
The Amex Gold card does not offer any complimentary airport lounge access. Bottom Line: If you value worldwide lounge access, the Amex Platinum card is a clear winner as the Amex Gold card does not offer any form of airport lounge access.
Amex Platinum ultimately offers more value, though. For example, its benefits include airport lounge access, while the Amex Gold Card's perks do not. When it comes to ongoing rewards on purchases, Amex Platinum has a higher maximum earning rate and better travel rewards. But Amex Gold provides more everyday value.
Interest charges accrue when you don't pay the bill off in full. Pay Over Time charges an interest rate that is the same across the Green, Gold and Platinum products. As of August 2020, cardholders who use the feature will pay an APR between 15.99% to 22.99%, depending on creditworthiness.
American Express Gold Card Review Summary
Based on my analysis of Amex Gold and 1,500+ other credit card offers, the American Express® Gold Card is a good credit card for people with a 700+ credit score who want to earn bonus rewards on travel and dining purchases.
Can you waive the Amex Gold's annual fee? Unfortunately, the American Express® Gold Card's annual fee is something that normally can't be waived. However, if you're considering downgrading or canceling your card, you can try calling Amex customer service and asking for a retention offer.
The Amex Platinum is one of the most prestigious travel credit cards you can own. Trying for an American Express credit card lets you establish a relationship with Amex. Plus, it can make it easier to add the Amex Platinum Card to your wallet in the near future.
Two cards, two bonuses
And it's possible to earn welcome bonuses on all of American Express' cards. There's no rule prohibiting you from earning a bonus on the Gold card because you have the Platinum card — or vice versa — so long as you meet the other application rules.
If you purchase your vehicle at one of the selected certified dealers, you can use your Amex Gold card to cover at least $2,000 of the purchase price; some dealers will allow you to charge even more.
While this premium rewards credit card charges a $250 annual fee, several Amex Gold benefits make paying this fee well worth it. These include up to $120 in Uber Cash, up to $120 in dining credits each year and up to a $100 hotel credit with The Hotel Collection.
Is it hard to get an Amex Gold card? Getting the Amex Gold Card isn't the easiest card to qualify for as you need good or excellent credit. That means having a minimum 670 FICO score and existing cards in good standing. Being an existing American Express cardholder can also make it easier to qualify.
Amex Gold Card Welcome Bonus Offer
We value Membership Rewards points at about 2.2 cents per point, which means that an elevated offer of 90,000-point bonus offer is worth ~$1,980 and a 60,000-point bonus offer is worth ~$1,320.
