Famous in both the wizarding and Muggle communities, Merlin was a wizard who was open about his abilities and who did good for the world, making him one of the good Slytherin wizards.
Severus Snape, Horace Slughorn, Andromeda Tonks, Narcissa Malfoy and Regulus Black were all Slytherin heroes in their own way, if you think about it. And Merlin – as in, yes, King Arthur's advisor and the most famous wizard in history – was a Slytherin.
Who are the evil witches and wizards in the Harry Potter books that weren't members of the Slytherin house? Peter Pettigrew, who was in Gryffindor. Prof Quirrel, who was in Ravenclaw. Gilderoy Lockhart (not evil per se but definitely a criminal) who was in Ravenclaw as well.
But Harry did share some Slytherin traits: he was ambitious and cunning, always sneaking around after hours and cooking up plans with Ron and Hermione. His green eyes even match the house. It is curious to think what the Sorting Hat would have deduced without Voldemort's involvement in Harry's life.
Worst: Lucius Malfoy
Lucius Malfoy is pretty clearly a bad person, but he's a perfect example of how banal cruelty and evilness can be. Lucius likes to control, humiliate, and cause people pain, but he's also too weak and self-absorbed to really become one of the evil "greats," so to speak.
He actually asked the Sorting Hat to place him in Hufflepuff, as he was intimidated by Gryffindor's reputation for bravery, but the Sorting Hat didn't agree. They debated it for so long, that he was close to being what is known as a Hatstall, which is a term for any student whose Sorting takes longer than five minutes.
Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), aka Tom Riddle, was described by Dumbledore as one of the best students ever to graduate Hogwarts as well as "the most dangerous Dark wizard of all time." Before he had even learned about the existence of the Wizarding world, he was terrorizing his fellow orphans with impressive but ...
One of the main reasons Dumbledore belongs in Gryffindor and not Slytherin is because he is willing to sacrifice himself for others. Dumbledore fatally injured himself hunting down Horcruxes and even this did not deter him from his fight against Voldemort.
Hufflepuffs. Hufflepuffs are the opposite of Slytherins because they are eager to build a consensus that everyone can live with.
In the Chamber itself, we see a large statue of a wizard, which Harry presumes is Salazar Slytherin. We also meet Tom Riddle, who is, as it turns out, the heir of Slytherin.
If there's anything a Slytherin loves, it's a loyal follower, and a Hufflepuff embodies this to a tee. Want a partner you can rely on, especially if things turn dark? Only a Hufflepuff will endeavour to see the good through the bad, no matter what. Lastly, we have Slytherin partnerships with Gryffindors.

Slytherins are resourceful, clever, and self-aware; like these Myers-Briggs categories, they know who they are and what they want, and they have the work ethic to achieve their desired results.
Slytherins and Hufflepuffs share a bond that is nothing short of being platonic soulmates. Hufflepuffs are the only ones patient enough to really get to know someone without any judgment. Since Slytherins are often on edge, they truly appreciate the safe space that Hufflepuffs create.
Bad Slytherin Personality Traits. Most Slytherins are prideful, malicious, rule-breakers, sneaky, and manipulative. They get what they want, but usually by stepping on, hurting, or using the people around them to do it.
If Harry had been placed in Slytherin, it would have altered his path drastically. It's doubtful, for example, that he would have developed such a strong friendship with Ron and Hermione. Although that's not to say that he would have got on with Draco Malfoy, either. He was, after all, the worst.
Her motivations and values are not Slytherin in nature. While she does possess pretty much all Slytherin traits she does not value them like she values her Gryffindor traits. She thinks it's important and admirable to be brave, but not ambitous. And her motivations are of a generally selfless nature.
At the core, Harry's reasons for not wanting to be in Slytherin were due to all the negative stories he had heard from Ron (his to-be best friend) and Hagrid (his first wizard friend). Besides, he had also had a distasteful first encounter with Draco (a Slytherin hopeful).

She asked for it so the hat put her in GRyfindor but by no means is that the only reason. Tottot1234 Terry Boot: "How come you're not in Ravenclaw? With brains like yours?"
