Refined grains are generally low in magnesium. When white flour is refined and processed, the magnesium-rich germ and bran are removed. Bread made from whole grain wheat flour provides more magnesium than bread made from white refined flour.
Whole Wheat Bread
Whole grains, like oats and barley, are excellent sources of many nutrients, including magnesium. Many whole grains are also high in B vitamins. Two slices of whole wheat bread contain 46 mg of magnesium.
Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, are good sources [1,3]. In general, foods containing dietary fiber provide magnesium. Magnesium is also added to some breakfast cereals and other fortified foods.
Fruit juices such as orange juice, cherry juice, and watermelon juice are all good sources of magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. According to the FNDDS, the average school container (124 grams) of 100% orange juice provides : 13.6 mg of magnesium.
Dark chocolates are confirmed as an excellent source of magnesium (252.2 mg/100 g) and iron (10.9 mg/100 g): in chocolate containing 90% cocoa, their content corresponds to, respectively, 67.0% and 80.3 of Nutrient Reference Values (NRV) in the European Union.
Nonfat or Lowfat Greek Yogurt
Nonfat or low-fat Greek yogurt is a great source of magnesium: Expect roughly 18.7 mg in just one 6-oz container, according to the USDA. Greek yogurt is also high in protein (17.5 g).
In addition to antioxidants, blueberries are rich in nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, as well as vitamins C, E, and K.
Egg is rich in phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and contains moderate amounts of sodium (142 mg per 100 g of whole egg) (Table 3). It also contains all essential trace elements including copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc (Table 3), with egg yolk being the major contributor to iron and zinc supply.
Meat and poultry don't have a lot of magnesium, but you can find it in soy, cheese, and yogurt. These meat alternatives are also good magnesium sources: Black-eyed peas.
How much magnesium can be found in potatoes? A 175g portion of boiled new potatoes in their skins provides 8% of your NRV (Nutrient Reference Values) of magnesium. You'll find about 49mg of magnesium in a medium sized potato which is a hefty contribution to the recommended allowance.
One medium-sized banana includes 9 percent of your daily potassium requirement, 33 percent of your vitamin B6 requirement, and 8 percent of your magnesium requirement.
Broccoli is not just a good source of magnesium, but it also contains other nutrients like vitamins C and K, fiber, and calcium.
Peanuts and peanut butter
Peanuts are legumes, not true nuts, however, they are also a good source of magnesium. A quarter-cup of roasted peanuts contains 63 milligrams, for 15% of the DV. You can get 49 milligrams in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, for 12% of the DV.
Chronic magnesium deficiency is often associated with normal serum magnesium despite deficiency in cells and in bone; the response to oral supplementation is slow and may take up to 40 weeks to reach a steady state.
Nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, leafy vegetables, milk, yogurt and fortified foods are good sources. One ounce of almonds contains 20% of the daily magnesium an adult needs. Even water (tap, mineral or bottled) can provide magnesium. Some laxatives and antacids also contain magnesium.
Phytates in the diet bind to magnesium and impair its absorption. However the quantities present in normal diet do not affect magnesium absorption. Other dietary factors that are thought to affect magnesium absorption are oxalate, phosphate, proteins, potassium and zinc.
You might have trouble absorbing magnesium from food if you drink too much alcohol, have kidney problems, take certain medicines, or have celiac disease or long-lasting digestive problems.
