If B2 is what many consider “fluent,” then C1 is fluency with increased nuance and understanding. At C1, you can understand subtle jokes in the language, and express yourself with colorful native phrases. When you reach C1, you should have a working vocabulary of about 8000 words – almost double that of B2!
A C1 level of English allows for a full range of functionality at work or in an academic setting. The C1 level would allow for full autonomy in a native English-speaking country.
C1 English (Advanced)

B1 is synonymous with good language skills. B2 is synonymous with very good/fluent language skills. C1 is synonymous with business fluent language skills. C2 is synonymous with (almost) native language level.
If a person is at C1, this is advanced level. He/she can do the following: Understand a wide range of more demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning in them. Express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for the right expression.
A C2 Proficiency qualification shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level. It proves you can communicate with the fluency and sophistication of a highly competent English speaker.
You can expect to encounter more complex, nuanced texts and questions in C2 Proficiency compared to C1 Advanced. However, both tests are at a high level and success in either qualification will be accepted as proof of English proficiency by most universities.
Level B2: Basic Fluency
Reaching B2 is generally considered by most people as having basic fluency.
C1 Advanced Scale Scores
The examination also provides reliable assessment at the level above C1 (Level C2) and the level below (Level B2). Scores between 142 and 159 are also reported for C1 Advanced. You will not receive a certificate, but your Cambridge English Scale score will be shown on your Statement of Results.
A well-educated native English speaker is technically at a C2 level. Relatively few English learners reach this level because their professional or academic goals do not require it.
C1 is an advanced user level (stand-alone level). This means that you have the following capabilities: Understand long and demanding texts and grasp implicit meanings. Speak spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words.
The answer is yes! You will need to work a lot harder and be serious about your preparation for the C1 Advanced exam. While the B2 First shows you have a good grounding in English, the C1 Advanced is closer to the level of a native speaker.
The highest level on the CEFR scale is C1, which is close to the level of English proficiency of native speakers.
A person who scores at C2 level on a CEFR exam may have a near-native speaker level of proficiency in the language, but their proficiency in the language may still be different from a native speaker in various areas such as colloquial expressions, accents, and some cultural knowledge.
Look for newspapers and magazines from English-speaking countries. Try reading academic and business articles. Befriend digital books and use resources such as the dictionary to enrich your vocabulary and learn new expressions.
A C1 Advanced qualification shows that you can:

Is C1 Advanced hard? Definitely yes. It is proof of language skills similar to those of native speakers. Although it is not the highest language level, (higher is C2) it represents the understanding of the language at the academic level and the ability to talk about virtually any topic freely.
A C1 certificate in English, which is close to bilingual level, allows candidates not only to greatly improve their job potential, but also to access bibliography, technical material and professional connections only available to the most advanced graduates.
