When a caffeine molecule keeps adenosine from binding, it promotes wakefulness. New research has shown that coffee consumption can suppress the production of melatonin produced by the pineal gland.
Caffeine and melatonin have a minor interaction. Basically, the caffeine in the coffee will handily cancel out the effect of the melatonin, and you'll just end up wide awake, staring at the popcorn texture on the ceiling, 11 cents worth of sleeping aid poorer.

In general, melatonin production decrease with aging. Among the other factors that have been most consistently linked to modified melatonin levels are disrupted light–dark cycles, night work and being overweight.
Melatonin secretion decreases during aging. Reduced melatonin levels are also observed in various diseases, such as types of dementia, some mood disorders, severe pain, cancer, and diabetes type 2. Melatonin dysfunction is frequently related to deviations in amplitudes, phasing, and coupling of circadian rhythms.
Your sleep is heavily dependent on your sleep hormone melatonin. If there is a deficiency, this can result in signs of restlessness [1] [2], a poor stress response, insomnia and waking up too early in the morning.
Cherries
Cherries (especially sour cherries like the Montmorency variety) are one of the only (and highest) natural food sources of melatonin.
Eggs and fish are higher melatonin-containing food groups in animal foods, whereas in plant foods, nuts are with the highest content of melatonin. Some kinds of mushrooms, cereals and germinated legumes or seeds are also good dietary sources of melatonin.
In humans melatonin has diurnal variations. The hormone secretion increases soon after the onset of darkness, peaks in the middle of the night, between 2 and 4 a.m., and gradually falls during the second half of the night (figure 3). This circadian rhythm of secretion plays an important role in its hormonal activity.
The Connection Between Melatonin and ADHD
Many kids with neurodevelopmental problems (e.g., ADHD, autism, and Tourette's) may actually make less of the brain chemical melatonin than their neurotypical peers.
But, although the hormone's plasma levels at nighttime remain at least an order of magnitude higher than at daytime throughout the life span, its absolute concentrations undergo a continuing decline after peaking at ages 2–5 yr (2–4).
One study of older adults with insomnia found that magnesium supplementation at a dose of 500 milligrams daily for eight weeks helped them fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, reduced nighttime awakenings, and increased their levels of naturally circulating melatonin.
You cannot build up a tolerance to melatonin. This means that the same dosage of melatonin taken every day will not build up in the body, and you won't need a higher dosage over time to experience the same effect.
In humans and most diurnal mammals, melatonin is secreted at night with a robust circadian rhythm and maximum plasma levels that occur around 3 to 4 AM. The daily rise of melatonin secretion correlates with a subsequent increase in sleep propensity about 2 hours before the person's regular bedtime.
If you've been drinking alcohol, it's also not safe to take melatonin. Melatonin is also not for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Researchers simply don't have enough data to know if it's safe for fetuses or breastfed babies.

It has a half-life of 40 to 60 minutes. The half-life is the time it takes for the body to eliminate half a drug. Typically, it takes four to five half-lives for a drug to be fully eliminated. This means melatonin will stay in the body for about 5 hours.
Avoid drinking too many caffeine drinks (coffee, cola or energy drinks) while you are taking melatonin - especially at bedtime. Caffeine is a stimulant and therefore has the opposite effect of melatonin in your body, reducing its impact.
Melatonin and many other herbal products can increase your risk of bleeding, seizures, or low blood pressure. Using certain products together can increase these risks. Avoid coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks, or other products that contain caffeine.
Depending on how much you've had to drink, you should wait at least 2-3 hours before taking melatonin. If you've had several, it's best to avoid taking any melatonin before bed.
