Emily-Elizabeth adopted Clifford when he was a very small puppy, when her parents gave him to her on her 6th birthday. Emily-Elizabeth's love apparently caused Clifford to grow enormous, thus starting their new lives on Birdwell Island.
Clifford is based on and inspired by Norman Bridwell's childhood desire for a dog the size of a horse. In 1962, Bridwell included paintings of Clifford, (who was named 'Tiny' at the time) in a portfolio of children's book illustrations.
Clifford's iconic hue was picked totally at random: “It was red because I happened to have red paint on the drawing table that night,” Bridwell told the Boston Globe in 2004. Turns out that happy accident is part of the reason why kids are so obsessed with him.
She is also pretty peppy. Emily is Clifford's owner as well as his best friend, having adopted him when he was a small puppy. Her love caused his enormous size resulting in them having to leave their Pembroke Home for a new home in Lumberton. She is nine-years-old.
Clifford has a mother, two brothers, and two sisters, all of whom are normal-sized dogs.
The dog is red for a practical reason.
When asked how he decided on Clifford's signature color, Bridwell admitted that “it was red because I happened to have red paint on the drawing table that night.” The color may be one reason kids love Clifford: “He's a bright color with a lot of movement.
The 5 Seconds of Summer guitarist, 27, and wife Crystal Leigh, 33, are expecting their first baby together, a rep for the couple confirms exclusively to PEOPLE. "I'm filled with excitement and also with nerves," Clifford tells PEOPLE.
A few people have already answered this correctly, but as they said, it's explained that (even though Clifford started out as a normal-sized puppy), he was filled with all of his owner's love, making him grow and grow until he was a giant. It's a kid's story, after all.
Clifford is a Giant Vizsla. Although Clifford is over 10 feet tall and weighs A LOT (we don't know exactly how much because he broke the scale!), the average Vizsla is only about 2 feet tall and between 45 and 65 pounds.
Since dogs Clifford's size don't exist, the production team used a bulky, red exoskeleton controlled by two puppeteers. (The dog is too big for just one.) The puppeteers, Rowan Magee and Jon Riddleberger, wore matching red shoes and knee-length shorts to camouflage as they carried the dog's body around New York City.
She adopted Clifford when he was a puppy, and her massive amount of love for him resulted in his enormous size, resulting in her family having to leave their New York City apartment for a home on Birdwell Island.
In this adaptation, Emily (Darby Camp) is a lonely New York City middle schooler who's been left in the care of her immature Uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) while her mom is out of town. After attending an animal rescue event, Emily ends up with a cute little red puppy, who quickly grows into a massive dog.
During the celebrations that follow, Red Dog gets up and walks out of the bar, unnoticed by everyone. Upon realizing that the sick dog has left, everyone in the town begins looking for him, eventually finding him lying dead in front of John's grave.
Cleo is a purple tomboyish poodle and one of Clifford's best friends. She is a purplish-gray poodle who has a pink bow in the middle of her forhead. Cleo is voiced by Cree Summer who also voiced Kitana, Susie Carmichael, Abigail Lincoln, and Kida.
February 14 is an important day around the Scholastic offices, and not just because it's Valentine's Day: It's Clifford's birthday!
'Clifford The Big Red Dog' Turns 50 (In Human Years) A big dog has a big birthday this year: Norman Bridwell's beloved Clifford was born in 1962. Bridwell says he was "shocked" when it was accepted for publication.
As Emily struggles to fit in at home and at school, she discovers a small red puppy who is destined to become her best friend.
Clifford the Big Red Dog is an American children's book series about a giant red Vizsla named Clifford.
Mark Howard is the father of Emily Elizabeth Howard and the husband of Carolyne Howard. He has brown hair. In Clifford's Puppy Days, he retains his original appearance from the original cartoon and unlike his wife he has no changes.
He tells her he can't make Clifford small again as it was her love that made him big. Bridwell advises Emily to advocate for Clifford and herself, and that being different is a gift. Emily explains to everyone the importance of love, regardless of differences.
The look of Clifford hasn't changed much. His fur is more textured to make him fluffier and he has a bigger, rounder face. As for the stories, they're “a little more empowering for girls, as well as for boys,” said Iole Lucchese, president of Scholastic Entertainment and chief strategy officer for Scholastic Inc.
